Camping Weekend in Pennsylvania
 

Hey All,

Planning on driving to meet friends for a weekend and it turns out that central Pennsylvania is about half way for each of us.

We're hoping to find a decent spot to go camping for the weekend, but don't particularly want overly established campgrounds. Ie: not interested in lots of facilities and lots of little kids. anything a little more rustic and private would be what we're looking for.

basically want to camp, cook good food, go for hikes, and if we can find a lake, do some kayaking.

any suggestions?

I thought of French Creek, too, but it looks like exsctly the kind of place JMWF doesn't want...

You should include "primitive camping" in your search.

Anyplace that has hot running water, showers and flush toilets will also have sites close together and will probably also have some children (especially any State Parks).

You can car camp on most of the Allegheny NF. There's a map on the link, and the reverse tells you the areas where you can't car camp as well as all the established campgrounds. You can kayak on the Allegheny River/Reservoir. I'd go here.

You can also car camp on the State Forests in PA (much of the north central part of the state is state forest), but you have to register with the district ranger office first. In the NF you can just go where you like.
