camping on kauai and maui

I'm moving to the Big Island in a few weeks, and am planning a trip once I'm there to Maui and Kaua'i. In the interests of saving money, my friend and I have decided to camp. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to camp on either island, if it's safe or a bad idea? Suggestions in general? Thanks!

You can only camp in specific sites. In the summer, camping is very popular and the desireable campsites will fill up very fast. You should get reservations. Most campsites have a limit on the # of days you can stay, and everyone must be out on Tuesday morning. The rangers patrol to check for permits and fees.

It's not just reservations, you need a permit for each campsite. I know years ago it wasn't considered safe (we camped on all the islands about 30 years ago), but don't know the situation now.

Go over to the Kauai forum on tripadvisor and check it out. I read one report of someone who camped on Kauai who came home early because he said the campgrounds were not safe due to the high number of meth addicits living there. Don't know if it is true; but you should do some research.

Hey didn't that guy post here too? The post ended up being removed I believe. Removed or closed.

There were way more posts but they were deleted and the thread was closed.

That post was hysterical - and weird at the same time.
Most of the responses (mine included) got deleted.

Maybe he'll weigh in with more highlights of his trip.
