Camping in Yellowstone? Good idea for a family?

Lodging seems hard to find in the park for our familyvisit in August. We have managed so far to find 1 night in a cabin but are now considering camping. We are not experienced campers but not complete novices either but we would appreciate advice on whether camping is a good idea or whether we ought to look for hotels outside park. Thought kids might enjoy the adventure of camping. But what are the campsites like in the park? Is there a real danger of bear attacks? How cramped are camp sites? Are the locations good? Facilities?

Even in summer, we find it too cold there at night.

Our choices are usually Gardiner, MT (lots of places and range of prices, lovely scenery, 10 minutes from the park, Mammoth area) or West Yellowstone (also a good option).
When the kids were younger, we'd make sure of a pool for them to unwind at the end of a day of hiking and driving

What you need to know if you are camping or hiking and encounter a bear. http://www.yellowstone-bearman.com/campw_bears.html
Make sure the kids know not to sneak food into their tent when going to bed.

We have camped and stayed in various lodging over the years. Like both. I think Sylvia's ideas are the best.

We've stayed in West Yellowstone (west entrance to park) & enjoyed it. Small town that offers several restaurants, shops, Wolf/Bear Discovery Center & IMAX theatre, local museum, grocery store. If you're able to book rooms, it would be a good idea to arise early in AM & drive into park to beat crowds & see animals along the way. You could have breakfast inside the park or take to-go items with you from a deli/grocery & enjoy at a pull-off area. We did & it was a relaxing break!

Also, keep calling twice daily for in park reservations. Tour groups and individual people book a year in advance, but then some cancellations happen as their refund window approaches and they change their minds.

We camped there years ago-in a tent.
Surprisintly cold at night-I figured it out after I realized most people were in R.V.s! I think if you could rant an RV-you would enjoy it-great location and fun to eat outside, etc. plus saves time traveling-but only in an R.V.
Agree with other posters-West Yellowstone is a good option
