Camping in UP of Michigan
Taking a camping trip with our RV to the upper peninsula of Michigan in late August. We will be traveling all the way to the Porcupine Mts. Any campground suggestions or things to do while we are up there? Already have Mackinaw Island, Teq. Falls, and Soo Locks on list.
Thanks! |
Our favorite spot in the UP is the west end of the Porcupine Mts. The campground there has vault toilets but electricity. It is smaller and quieter than the main campground.
You have some nice hikes right from the campground as well as a great place to take a dip in Lake Superior. I know, I know, it's cold but a river enters the lake right there and makes for nice swimming on hot days. Pictured Rocks has a number of camping areas, not sure which ones are best for RV's. Another option is Bay Furnace just west of Munising. Some great views. Will you have bikes? Grand Island, just off of Munising, makes for a great day trip with bikes. A drive up the Keewanaw Penisula is nice especially if you take the Brockway Mt. Drive. Is your RV self-contained or do you have a separate vehicle? This drive would not work in an RV. Do you like wildlife? Seney Wildlife refugee is a nice place to stretch and they have a 7 mile drive with great viewing. I'll keep thinking. |
Palms Book State Park, just west of Manistique and a few miles north of a paved road is an interesting stop for an hour or so. It consists primarily of a large spring which is the beginning of a river. There is( was anyway) a human powered float with a viewing area in the middle that you can move out over the depths of the spring to see where the water comes out of the bottom of the pool and watch the large fish swimming around below you.

For some isolation, there is a nice campground on Drummond Island if you want to relax, maybe fish a little and avoid crowds.

Fayette Historic State Park has camping, Swimming, fishing, hiking, and an iron smelting ghost town. http://www.michigandnr.com/parksandt...fo.aspx?id=417
