Camping in the Keys?
I'm planning a trip to the Keys in May. I'm wondering what the camping experience is like. I'll probably stay at a hotel but am curious about camping.
|
I've camped on two keys: Bahia Honda and Long Key. But it's been years, and I was much younger. Make sure you pick a month other than May, June, July, August or September so as to avoid the brutal heat. Both areas (which are state parks) allowed us to tent camp on the beach, so there are good ocean breezes. But the sun DOES beat down. I found both Long and Bahia Honda to be clean and to have nice, albeit small, beaches. Have fun.

Oopps -- just saw that you said you were going in May. Hopefully, it's early May.

I've stayed at several KOA's in the Keys and thought all of them were run well. We never camp at state parks because they don't allow alcohol. We always go for Memorial weekend in May and IT IS HOT. I live in Florida and it was still really hot for me. Several times it rained while we were there. Bring bug spray as the mosquitos can be brutal. I don't want to dissuade you - we still go year after year. Just plan to shop or go to the beach during the day and hang out at the campsite only at night.

Loafer, are these KOA's ocean front?

Anon, <BR> The ones I stayed at were all on the water and had boat tie-up's available. They also had pools, but they were constantly crowded with hoards of people. Knight's Key is the only one I can think of right now...
