camping in the Adirondacks
 

We are looking for a nice campground in the Adirondacks. We have a tent and 2 children - ages 5 and 2. We are open to anywhere in the Adirondacks but would love a beach/lake nearby and a nice place for bike riding. Thank you in advance!

I don't have a personal experience with camping in the Adirondacks but the below link has great and detailed information. Our friends stay at KOA campground in Wilmington and enjoyed it.

I'm not a camper, but I live nearby and Northampton campsite might fit your needs. This is a beautiful area of the Adirondacks.

Look into Rolands Pond in the Saranac Lake area ... It's my favorite place to camp in the Adirondacks. You can get a site right on the water and can even rent canoes right at the campsite ... they drop it off right at your site. (No motor boats allowed, so it's really nice.) It's adjacent to Fish Creek Pond, which is also water front, but the campsites at Rolands Pond are much more private .... I like it much better there. (They are both New York State campgrounds, so you can reserve via the NY State campgrounds webpabe.)

Many things everyone for the wonderful suggestions. The hard part will be trying to decide which one to try!

Rolands Pond is good. So is Lake Harris and Lake Durant (they are smaller, quieter campgrounds - maybe a little boring for kids?). Eight Lake is also good. (I've camped at all of them.)

A couple campgrounds do not have flush toilets or showers (Little Sand Point and the other two on Pisceo Lake and maybe a few others.)

In the Adirondacks you definitely want to stick to the State DEC campgrounds. They are excellent.

On the state web site is a list of Family Activities at the various campgrounds. If you like that sort of thing check it out.

Fish Creek Pond was a favorite of mine as a kid. Lots to do. Swimming, Biking, Fishing, Hiking, Ranger programs and Boating if you have one etc. As a kid, i like that it was big and there were lots of other people. Lots of kids to befriend and play with.


Most sites are on the water. I loved it there.

I would highly recommend to go with Fish Creek Pond or Rolands Pond ... great campgrounds with nice factilities. I've also camped a few times at 8th Lake campground, but wouldn't go there anymore because they have consistent problems with the bears in that area ravaging the campgrounds at night to get food ... It's just too much of a pain to deal with that. (Although there are bears throughout the Adirondacks, they've had more of a problem with them around 7th & 8th Lakes and Big Moose area since they closed the dumps several years ago at Limekin Lake, where the bears in that area used to "feed".)
