Camping and 14er along I-70?
 

My brother and I are traveling west from denver and looking to camp near the base of a 14er in late July. The goal is to find a good hub near an easy/moderate 14er that can be done in a day. We don't have much time (2-3 days) and are looking for a site with at least the basics (facilities or outhouse) as we will be renting our gear and aren't familiar with the area. That said we don't want to be overcrowded with tourists as I realize this is peak season.

Not familiar with the demand with first come first served- if it makes a difference we'll be arriving on Thursday afternoon to the site.

Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks in advance for your help!

Are you driving from Denver or could you take the train (California Zephyr)?

DO you have to camp? Why not find a cheap motel or hostel in or near Breckenridge for Quandary Peak, or around Leadville for lots of options. Wake up before dawn and drive to the trailhead. I've done this with success.

I stayed there before summiting Quandary in winter. Great place.

There are (were) cheap motels south of Leadville with lots of 14'ers in the area.

We stayed in Leadville when we hiked Mt. Elbert, but there's a campground close to the trailhead. IMHO, there is no "easy" 14er! However, Mt. Elbert is not technical at all, but just a grind to climb. Both times we've hiked it we summited by 10:30 AM after starting at sunrise.
