I read a post where someone mentioned they had negotiated a good mid-week rate in Cambria by shopping the Inns the day he arrived.

We're looking at a late October Thursday night arrival, departing the next day. All of the inn's I've considered and contacted have plenty of rooms.

Should we forget reservations and see what kind of deal we can make when we arrive?
Any experience on how agressive the inn keepers will get to sell rooms on the day of?

(I guess we can sleep on the beach if this plan fails!)

I would make reservations just to be safe.

During a last minute trip, we tried winging it in April on a mid-week evening and found that reservations would have been the way to go. Fortunately my brother lives nearby so we all headed over and crashed on his floor. I'd recommend making your reservations now and check in a little sooner to your travel date and see if you can get any better rates.

We stayed in Cambia this past July. I made reservations at Moonstone Cove through Expedia. When we arrived they had a sign out front for room specials. An ocean front room was less than the room we rented and since we made our reservations over the internet we could not get their special rate, so we did go ahead and upgrade and pay the extra for an ocean front room (which was great). We arrived on a Wednesday afternoon - there did seem to be a lot of vacancies. Next time I return mid-week I will definitely take my chances. It is a wonderful area, enjoy your stay!

I like sightseer's advice about making a reservation and checking prices closer to the date you arrive. You can usually cancel up to 24 hours in advance without penalty. Be sure to check the specific rules on canceling the particular rate before you end up booking.
