Calming Stay near Seattle/Vacouver??
 

I will be in Vancouver for a wedding on Sunday and then flying out of Seattle on Tuesday. I'm looking to see if there's somewhere between the two or a reasonable drive from either city that I can spend a super relaxing night. Is there a great hotel on the water, a spa in the mountains? I am a picky traveler so modern amenities are my thing, but I will have just spent a very hectic week at Comic Con in San Diego followed by a family wedding and I will be DESPERATE for some serenity.

Yes, in Bellingham there is a really nice drive along Chuckanut Bay. As for where to stay, take a look at the Chrysalis Inn and Spa in Bellingham on the water. If you have time, head over to the east side of town and visit Whatcom Falls.

Several options, but it's important to know if you'll have a car.

1. Inn at Langley - http://www.innatlangley.com/ Langley is a very picturesque little waterfront village near the south end of Whidbey Island. From Vancouver you cross the border on I-5, then west on WA 20 to Deception Pass, the awesome narrow gap between Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands (worth a good stop, pick up a picnic lunch en route.) Then south on Whidbey on WA 20 and WA 525 to Langley. To get to Seattle from Langley you drive a couple of miles to the dock for the car ferry over to Mukilteo on the mainland, then east on WA 526 to Interstate 5; allow around 30 min. from Mukilteo to Seattle. On WA 526 (the "Boeing Freeway") you'll pass Boeing's Everett factory, biggest building in the world.

2. Edgewater Hotel, Seattle - http://www.edgewaterhotel.com/ This is right in Seattle, but get a waterfront room and you'll have a grand view, great food in the hotel restaurant, sunsets behind the Olympics, passing ferries and cruise ships, and if you need some urban amenities, they're right outside the door. Where the Beatles stayed. No car needed.

3. Salish Lodge, Snoqualmie - http://www.salishlodge.com/ Deluxe lodge and spa right next to Snoqualmie Falls, made famous as the "Great Northern" hotel in <i>Twin Peaks,</i> if you're old enough to remember. Around 40 min. east of Seattle off I-90.

4. Woodmark Hotel, Kirkland - http://www.thewoodmark.com/ Lakefront hotel and spa in Kirkland, across Lake Washington from Seattle. Yachty.

Correct, Vancouver BC...and I will have a car.

Washington State is short on properties of the kind you describe.

In Seattle, Inn at the Market might fit the bill.

A good place with "spa in the mountains" would be Sun Mountain Lodge, but it is 142 miles east of I-5 near Winthrop.

Of the three places Gardylyoo suggests, I'd go for the Inn at Langley. How about you?

Well actually I'd stay at the Captain Whidbey Inn, but these folks asked for something "modern".

From that list I'd pick Salish for a get-away or Woodmark if they want something close enough to sight-see Seattle from.
