Calling Portland, OR Area Residents: Where to Stay in August
 

We are taking a week in August to explore the Portland area and want to rent an apartment. Which neighborhoods should we target? We ar going with the intent of possibly renting/buying a summer home and want to check out suitable neighborhoods. We'd like to be nearby public transport of some sort, not too noisy - not in a bustling area. So maybe a short ride into the city would be okay, or a quiet area of the city where we can find a market, casual restaurants.

I would appreciate about 6 neighborhods to look into. I am asking kindly as I have not read much about the area (my vision is poor), but have been to Portland once about 10 years ago and loved it, loved the Columbia R.

Alternatively, we'd also be interested in anywhere within about an hour's drive from PDX. Nature is nice, love mountains, rivers, lakes.

That's a tough one, soogies.
Hawthorne, Mississippi street and Alberta street can have some serious occasional activity but if you were to buy a place a block or two off the main drags you would be within walking distance of good food and a variety of stores. Mississippi doesn't have much in the way of grocery stores, but it does have Pastaworks that carries lots of staples. Northwest is fun but lousy for parking.

I like the area called Sullivans Gultch - close to Lloyd Center- you can walk to several restaurants and there are several grocery stores close by too- friend has a condo in the area and always seems like a safe place. I think she would agree.

Look in the following Portland areas: Sellwood, Nob Hill (also known as NW), Laurelhurst, Hollywood, Concordia, Mississippi, Alameda/Freemont, maybe just south of Hawthorne near Division (not sure of the neighborhood names). Outside of Portland within an hour or so: Cannon Beach, Astoria, Stevenson, WA; Willamette Valley wineries/ b and b's - too many to list.
