Calling all Houstonians -- Should We Try to Have a GTG?

All this talk of get togethers (Dallas, San Antonio, NJ, etc.) is making me jealous! Anyone interested in a Houston GTG? Statia, emd, and other frequent visitors -- are you planning on being in town so we can work around your schedule?

Susan

Statia Feb 9th, 2005 03:39 PM

Well, I posted a reply and then the site went wacky on me.

Susan, I have also been a bit jealous of the wonderful GTG's going on around the US. :(

I don't have any immediate plans to be in Houston, but I have had an open ticket to IAH since September. I am just waiting for my mother's house to sell in order to go up and help her move into her new retirement community. She called tonight saying that she will have an offer on the table by tomorrow, so who knows. I will keep you posted.

If I am in town I would love to get together with any other Fodorites if I can swing it with my typically hectic Houston schedule.

I would love to attend a Fodors GTG in Houston. Count me in! Several years ago we had an all-Texas one in Austin TX. Four of us traveled over from Houston and there were several from the Austin area. Several women drove down from Dallas. It was great fun, and I made a longtime friend there. It was a hoot. People brought their travel albums and we all told tales of our travels. Great fun!
I'm going to England YEAHYEAHYEAH in early April for ten days, but I'd love to do something after, say, April 20.

I've posted to the Europe forum too... the end of April sounds good. Anyone else interested?

Any suggestions for a place to meet are also welcome.

rkkwan Feb 9th, 2005 07:39 PM

I am sure if you set a date and time, people will come. I mostly likely will. And you probably know restaurants better than most of us already... :D

jorr Feb 9th, 2005 08:09 PM

It must be nice to live in an area where there are other fodorities for a GTG.

LDLee Feb 10th, 2005 01:28 AM

Sounds good to me.

emd Feb 10th, 2005 03:49 AM

I am coming next Friday for the long weekend w/my daughter to visit family in west Houston. I don't know about April. I am going to Japan last two wks of March (a trip I've been planning for 18 months, taking my teen son) and if my work stays slow I may be on the way back to Japan in early May as there are cheap fares then. But if not, and if US Air has cheap fares from DCA to IAH (the just started nonstops on that route and have promo rates) I may try to come down there again to see friends and would love to go to a GTG.

dcespedes Feb 10th, 2005 04:01 AM

I'm interested! We'll be in Houston one weekend in April but I need to find out which one.

kk Feb 10th, 2005 05:13 AM

I can do the last weekend in April but not the earlier ones.

This sounds like great fun, and I think we should keep adding that anyone who is around can join--or anyone willing to fly or drive in, for that matter! Even people from up NORTH, like Dallas! Y'all come, Sandi B!

bellairegirl Feb 10th, 2005 05:53 AM

kk- Do you meant you're available the weekend of April 23-24 or the weekend of April 30 - May 1?

And of course, anyone who's willing to attend (no matter where you live) is welcome!

Also, let us know what day/time of day works for you (especially those out-of-towners like PM, dcespedes and emd). Saturday for lunch, Saturday for dinner, happy hour Friday, etc.

Susan

kk Feb 10th, 2005 06:01 AM

Sorry, Susan. I should've looked at a calendar.
I am available both of those two weekends and can do at this point any of those types of days you mentioned...though I would imagine that the Sat. or Sun.s would be easier than Friday after work.

kk Feb 10th, 2005 06:03 AM

That is to say, I meant that probably Fridays after work wouldn't be easy for anyone coming into Houston specifically for our GTG.

sandy_b Feb 10th, 2005 07:08 AM

Thanks kk but Houston is just a little too far away . . . I'll be eagerly awaiting a report on how it went.

Looks like I'm going to miss the DFW one, too . . . hopefully there will be another one soon.

Happy travels everyone,
Sandy (in Denton)

dcespedes Feb 10th, 2005 07:25 AM

Looks like we'll be in Houston the weekend of April 15th so I'll miss the GTG :-( Since my husband is there on business we can't move the date. If something changes let me know! :-)

bellairegirl Feb 10th, 2005 11:35 AM

Oh, dcespedes, that's a shame! How long will you be in town? I guess there's no date that works for you and kk? (I know I have a conflict on April 17th, but otherwise am pretty flexible.)

What date works for everyone else?

Susan

Kal Feb 10th, 2005 11:45 AM

Why would you want to have a GTG with a bunch of people who are generally positive, interested in travel, food, wine, photography ,etc?

I-)I-)I-)

bellairegirl Feb 10th, 2005 01:45 PM

You're right, Kal. I could just as well stay home and watch Amazing Race if I want to see people complain and whine.

Susan

JimF Feb 10th, 2005 01:53 PM

I would very much like to attend. Most of April is wide open right now.

So, do we have a date? From the posts, seems like Saturdays or Sundays are best. I would prefer lunch or afternoon. Since it will be in April or May, margaritas on a patio sounds good to me.
