Calling all Australians in NYC!

I'm a New Yorker heading to Chicago for the weekend to visit a high school friend and her Australian boyfriend. They recently moved into together, so I'm looking for a housewarming gift with a possible Australian theme.

Does anyone know of a store in NYC that sells Australian gifts, souvenirs, or transportable food items?

The wine discount store on Broadway on Astor Place sells Australian wine, and I'm sure it is available at lots of wine stores in the city.

Wine will probably be my backup, but I'm hoping to find something a little more random like kangaroo jerky:-)

Just as an fyi - Astor Wines is not on Broadway and Astor Place, anymore.

They moved about 2 months ago to Lafayette, about a couple of blocks south of Astor Place.

There's some info here about Australian gourmet food products that might still be available at Dean & Deluca.

Many of the food "stuff" the Aussies like are also English like Bovril, Marmite... Vegimite is Australian

I don't know where it's sold though. I think I've heard Chinatown.

I don't live in NY, but if you find Tim Tams, you'll probably make a fan for life. Ordering a pack or so for my Australian has helped smooth many a boneheaded move on my part (but I usually order what she likes just because she likes it... just to make that clear.... ;) )

World Market has them here, but they're labeled as Arnott's Chocolate Biscuits. They may have them in the NYC as well. World Market carries quite a few Australian food items.

To get an idea of what Aussie ex-pats order for themselves, check www.simplyoz.com

ps - vegemite is well known, but I do know it's an acquired taste not all Australians have acquired. Personally, I can see why... ugh. lol

Has anyone been to Tuckshop on 1st St. and 1st Ave.? I'm trying to figure out whether they stock retail goods in addition to prepared food.
