A world away from the glitter of Las Vegas, in 40 minutes.
Here's another day trip idea out of Las Vegas for those who want to get away from the glitter. Mt. Charleston is about 30-40 minutes from the strip (north on 95). But while only a few miles, it is like a different planet. You travel up to over 7,000 feet elevation, passing through many zones supporting different species of flora and fauna. Stop at a little visitor center and view exhibits showing the different zones and other geologic information. Also pick up maps and get info on hiking trails, of which there are many.
The Mt. Charleston Lodge is at the end of the road, and is a great place for lunch. There are cabins there also for those wishing to stay overnight. This place gets great reviews on Trip Advisor. (There is also the "Resort on Mt. Charleston," but we didn't stop there.)
We drove up there Monday, 11/11 and there was snow around, though not much, just in the coldest areas. Lunch was great at the lodge, and the views were wonderful.
Just another day trip alternative.
