California HWY 1
Can anyone give me the most economical place to stay the night on HWY 1? It will just be myself and my 14 yr old granddaughter. I will be traveling in June, 2012.
Thanks so much! Pat |
Highway 1 is quite long. Could you give us some idea of where you want to spend the night?
For example, do you want to be close to San Francisco, Monterey, Santa Barbara, or Los Angeles? Or do you want a recommendation north of San Francisco on the way to Oregon? |
North of San Francisco: Point Reyes HI Hostel. http://norcalhostels.org/reyes/
South of San Francisco: Point Montera Lighthouse or Pigeon Point Lighthouse Hostels. Click the link on the lower right side of the above link for either of these. |

There is a hostel in the Marine Headlands too.
|
I'm thinking I would like staying closer to San Fransico because it is on my iteneray for the following day.
Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions! I'm still researching! Pat |
The Marin Headlands are just across the Golden Gate bridge. The hostel is in Fort Cronkhite.
|
And I forgot ... there is or there used to be a hostel on the grounds above Fort Mason in San Francisco.
|
There are actually 3 HI Hostels in the city of San Francisco including Fort Mason. They cost more per bed than the ones on the Pacific coast.

This map of San Francisco may be helpful. http://sfhostels.com/files/sf_map.jpg
The Powell-Hyde cable car line is also marked on the map. |
I have never stayed in a hostel, but that is definately an economic option!
