California Coast

Is I t better to drive the Coast Road to see Big Sur in the morning or later in the afternoon? We have not been to Calif in 35 years and the last time we drove Rt 1 we saw nothing as it was socked in with FOG. We will be there the beginning of June.

Afternoon gives you a much better chance - but not too late in the afternoon.

The Morning fog often burns off by noon or 1 PM (But if it is especially hot inland, the coastal fog might not completely burn off at all)

We made the drive, north to south, last month; on a perfectly clear day the glare from the sun off the water made hard to enjoy the sights, it got very hot in the car. We were driving mid-late afternoon. I think, absent fog, it would be better in the morning before the sun gets too far down and starts the glare problem.

True - but a brilliant day last month has not much to do w/ the OP's trip in June. Entirely different weather/fog situation. And in June the sun will be higher in the sky til later in the day so unless they are doing the drive in the very late afternoon or early evening, there won't be much glare off the water.

I always advise visitors to drive south to north to avoid the glare over the water and looking into the sun - except for May, June & July when the sun is farthest north - like janisj mentioned.

I live on the coast and June is the start of the "foggy season". unfortunately June, July and August can be foggy. Many times the fog burns off mid day and the sunsets are beautiful. It can be chilly!
