Cailfornia Missions. Interested travelling companion?
Hello, hope Fodors can help.
I have a great interest in the California Missions; history, art; culture; architecture.
I am planning a 4 - 6 week trip, commencing April 2007, hoping to visit most of the Missions starting from San Diego and taking in other interesting parts of the US South West. I would like to find a travelling companion (female) with similar interests.
Is Fodors a suitable site to suggest such an idea?
I post this with plenty of time ahead of the trip, hoping to hear from ladies with similar interests. I'm a teacher, 50s, reasonably fit for the hoped-for trip. I live in the UK and travel extensively in the USA.
If anyone can suggest a more suitable site, one which may be more widely read, given my interests, I would be pleased to hear from you.
Thanks and kind regards
Mary

Here's a place to start: http://missions.bgmm.com/
Try a Google search of California missions. These Fodors threads will have lots of info about the cities along the way.

Thanks to you both.
Elizabeth, the suggested Missions Website is an excellent start and I did do a Google and most Missions have their own Website with just glorious pictures and a quite a bit of history too.
The University where I work is trying to find, through the British Library, some of the rarer books which give a more in-depth history of the Missions.
JJ5, 6 weeks is a luxury, isn't it? 2007 will be my final teaching year and I have worked it out that I take what's left of my annual leave plus some Research and Scholarly Activity time that academics in the UK are entitled to. That takes me right up until the end of the academic year, which is how I can do that which I have dreamed of doing since my first visit to a California Mission about 20 years ago. It's my retirement present to myself, after 35 years lecturing.
I really don't mind doing this trip alone but it's always nice to share the 'ooh's' and 'ahh's' and a glass or two of wine with a meal after a day's hard 'Missioning' and other sightseeing with a like-minded companion.
I hope it works out.
Thanks again.

MaryJo, I enjoy reading the newsletter but do not have personal experience with this website. I hope you find it helpful in finding a travelmate.
