Cafe des Artistes has closed

The NY Times reports this morning that this well-known and popular Upper West Side spot has closed after 92 years. They said that like all other places, business was down, but not terrible. "We feel it's time," they were quoted as saying.
However, since the restaurant's name is owned by the building owner, don't be surprised if a new restaurant owner surfaces!

The decor was great, we loved to go there for a drink. I hope the new owner keeps the best of the decor but offers improved food and service.
FYI, the web site is still up, so people can look at photos of the place.

This makes me very sad. My grandfather lived within a few blocks of this restaurant for decades and it was one of his favorite haunts. Nothing was more exciting for me as a financially struggling young adult than to eat there with him, see him greeted by name and with hugs by the owner and to have my grandfather point out famous people who were there or who he had seen there. I am actually shedding a few tears as one more tie to my long deceased but beloved grandfather disappears.

I thought the decor was gorgeous but the food was nothing great.

The decor is incredible, but the food has fallen off in recent years. I think any place can survive long-term only with a regular infusion of new blood - whether passed down to younger family member - or new owners. I hope whoever takes it over just freshens the decor - there will always be a need for lovely traditional places among the trendy.

One of my parent's favorite places. They often went before the opera. Thought it was a great treat when I was taken, but that must be thirty years ago!
