Cabin Honeymoon Out West
 

Hi!

My fiance and I are getting married on Sept. 20 of this year. We want to honeymoon somewhere we have never been and started discussing somewhere out west- maybe Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Utah etc.

Were not big on super-touristy stuff (although its not out of the question) and we would ideally like to rent a private cabin with a hot tub outside- near mountains or somewhere else breathtaking. We are pretty outdoorsy people- want somewhere near things like horseback riding, hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, kayaking, maybe some kind of canyoning or something along those lines. It doesnt have to have ALL those things-- those are just ideas of things we would really like to do.

I am looking for suggestions on areas/companies/private persons to rent from- or even a really great lodge as long as there is still privacy. We are not opposed to suggestions in Tennessee or even Canada as well as the other states I mentioned. Please no international suggestions beyond Canada-- fiance isnt huge on over-ocean flights. :)

We would like to stay somewhere for a week- and ideally have the cost of lodging for that week be below $1500.

Ive never rented a cabin before and neither has he- but when we thought of the idea it just stuck and we havent been able to shake it! Hoping more experienced people can help us out here!

By Sept 20th, white water rafting will be more than over. Run off too low. Might find a float trip on bigger rivers but no white water. In Colorado, Montana - the mountain areas - by late September it will depend on the altitude but outdoor hot tubs could be limited because of overnight freezing temperatures. And some possibility of running into snow. At that time many of the ski areas will have very good deals on condo rentals because it is between seasons. So places like Breckenridge, Vail, Aspen, Frisco in Colorado would be attractive price wise.

If you refine your plans a bit more, we could be more helpful.

OK so whitewater rafting is out- thats not a huge deal. I didnt know about the low runoff- thanks for that info!

Mostly we want to be somewhere that isnt in a metropolitan-feeling city and is close to hiking/biking trails/areas with a hot tub. The horseback riding is definitely something we want to do as well. Are there areas in the western states that are better for these activities over others?

Take a look at Deep Forest Cabins in Ashford Washington...this is very close to the entrance of Mt Rainier National Park...September is nice weather, good hiking etc in park...lovely cabins with very private hot tubs!!!! Great for a honeymoon...I think it was a 2-3 hr drive from Seattle airport.

September is my favorite month in Montana, and you could have absolutely beautiful weather that week or it could snow, too. :) My husband and I always take a weekend trip somewhere in MT over the last weekend in September. We've had weather in the 70's and we've had snow and rain. But the aspens are almost always turning and so are the tarmaracks, and it's so pretty.

I would start looking through vrbo for areas near Red Lodge, Bozeman, Missoula, Whitefish/Big Fork or the Bitteroot Valley. The Whitefish Lake Lodge is pretty, right on the lake, and near a lot of great restaurants but it's not a cabin.

The rec from cmcfong is great, too, for Red Lodge.

Lake Tahoe, Nevada or California side. An hour or less from Reno Airport.

a couple of you have mentioned snow- I know were not fortune tellers, but how likely do you think that possibility is??

In MT, it depends on the elevation. It wouldn't be unusual to get light snow the last week of September. The low temps will be in the low 30's and high 20's. We were in Red Lodge on Sept. 13th this last year, and Oktoberfest at the brewery was rained/sleeted out.

Lake Tahoe, no chance of snow. Nice time of year, tourists gone, quiet.

It sounds like a guest ranch could be a good option for you. There are tons of them in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, etc.

No hot tubs, though, and it's pretty remote. Horses and fishing and peace & quiet.

My very favorite place is Devil's Thumb Ranch in Tabernash, CO. It's fairly pricey, though they often run specials. Especially in September you might find a deal. It's an extraordinary property, and we've seen a lot of them. They have one-bdrm cabins in the woods with fireplaces, but I don't know if there are hot tubs. They do have a spa and a lovely swimming pool. Horses, hiking, zip-lining, gorgeous scenery, private setting, great food and service. Rooms in the Lodge are 'cabin-y' in feeling, too.

Another is C Lazy U, near Granby, but it's more family-oriented.

Check out www.cabinsofcolorado.com - some great choices listed. Little Rocky looks fantastic! Very secluded and a hottub with a view of Pikes Peak.

Sunriver Oregon - hot tubs, the Deschues River and the beautiful Cascade Mountains all at your doorstep.

You mentioned Canada so I am going to suggest going to Vancouver Island - speciafically Tofino. Many places have hot tubs as it is a big surfing destination. You have hiking, ocean kayaaking, hot springs, etc, etc. Very outdoorsy and absolutely beautiful!
