Cabana Shores in Myrtle Beach
 

Has anyone stayed at the Cabana Shores in Myrtle Beach and if so how was it? How's the location? I'd appreciate any feedback.

I'm also wondering if anyone has any info on the Ocean Reef in Myrtle Beach.

I have not stayed at either place, but I can comment on the location of both: in a nutshell, excellent.

Ocean Reef is in the northern part of MB (approx. 71st Avenue North); Cabana Shores is a little further south, at about 57th Avenue North. Both are at these cross streets with Ocean Blvd; both are ocean-front.

As you can see from the websites, Cabana is much smaller, but remodeled in 2004. Also, this is a neat area of the beach where the hotels are all inland of Ocean Blvd, and the dunes are near pristine.

Ocean Reef is a much larger structure, and at least one of its towers is very new: 2003.

Thank you so much, beach_dweller. That info is very helpful, as I'd like to keep our stay in the northern section of Myrtle Beach, if not actually North Myrtle Beach.

Since you are familiar with the locations, can you tell me if there are any restaurants/bars within walking distance to either of these places?

Glad to help if I can. As far as restaurants & bars within walking distance, I am not as familiar with the Cabana Shores area. Ocean Reef (the one near 71st Avenue) presents some possibilities; but realize that walking distance in MB is probably measured in miles rather than blocks because everything is so spread out. Actually, the Grand Strand is NOT AT ALL a walkers paradise--it is really a drive here, get out & do something; drive there, get out & do something kind of place.

With that caveat, you could walk to an area on Kings Highway (a/k/a Business 17) between 79th Avenue and 76th that has some very decent places. I am guessing it is a mile or less. You would walk along Ocean Blvd from 71st to 76th, turn left (inland) on 76th until you get to a shopping center (on your left) where 76th intersects with Kings Highway.

There you'll find:

The Palms Bistro (nice, small bar/restaurant).

Collectors Cafe (one of the very best restaurants on the strand!)

Michael's Landing Pad (around the corner, past the CVS)(we keep meaning to go there; nice little restaraunt/bar, with local jazz groups on weekends).

Across King's Highway, there is another shopping center. This one has:

Liberty Tap Room & Grill (it will be open in a few weeks--it will be an outstanding bar)

Katrina's (according to most folks here, cut-above type Mexican food; we weren't wowed, but keep meaning to go back--food was fine, just not up to what we had been told to expect)

Atlanta Bread Company (if you don't have these where you are, it's ok, soups, sandwiches, salads--order at the counter, then pick up your food)

Oh! I almost forgot. At 70th Avenue & Kings Highway (even closer to Ocean Reef than the places mentioned above), you'll find:

Flamingo (very nice restaurant & sometimes lively bar scene)

Fiesta Mexicana (one of the better Mexican restaurants in town; but don't get your hopes up. The bar is pretty low in this area for Mexican/Southwestern cuisine).

I'm probably missing a few other places along Kings Highway. And realize that sidewalks are intermittent along Kings Highway--as I said, MB is not much of a walking town, EXCEPT for the beach :-)

beach dweller, you seem to know alot about MB. Any info on Caribbean Beach Resort or the Sand Dunes Resort?

It's at 30th Avenue North in MB, which is right on the northern edge of what I consider the heart of MB. Other than being next to a very good restaurant (especially for lunch), Sea Captain's House, I can't tell you much.

As to Sand Dunes Resort, it is part of a huge Sands hotel group. Sand Dunes has probably the best location in my opinion: 74th Ave North in MB--a largely residential area (although there are a good number of high rises right there, including Sand Dunes). Here's the link to their website:
