CA Storm Reports?

How is everyone surviving these storms, I'm interested to know? Cleaned up in the sunny break but more is on the way. Our hill looks well saturated and hours of running water since the rain stopped. Keeping an eye out for any movement.

Bodi, thank you for starting this thread!

The news on TV look awful! I tried to call LoveItaly if she's OK - her phone is busy. She may be in a flood area.

I live in downtown area of San Francisco, electricity is on, the buses are on time. In our building the elevator's engine is still out since the last storm. For me on the 2nd floor it's not as important, but we have elderly people up there, including the 6th floor. They complain it's difficult to carry the grocery bags.

Banging sound woke me up this morning at 4.30 - the wind was so strong, the windows could break!

The road to/from Reno I80 is closed in both directions due to mudslides. People are stranded.

I hope all Fodorites will log in for few minutes to check in!

Hello bodi and HELLO FAINA. Faina my phone is working now and I would call you but it is after 10:00pm so I feel like it is to late to make a phone call.

Here in Vacaville there sure have been some problems. Many streets were flooded, especially main intersections. And the downtown (old town) streets were also. I don't think that shops and restaurants downtown got flooded but not sure.

The street I live on is fine. But just 2 blocks away the supermarket had some fans goings, obviously the floors had been swamped with water. And streets just a couple of blocks from where I live were flooded.

My long porch was like a lake but fortunatly water did not come in under the front door. Another storm is due so do not know what that will bring.

The saddest thing is a gentleman went outside at 11:50am today to check on any storm damage and a large tree right at that moment fell over on him and killed him. How horrifying and sad is that?

My neighbor/friends daughters house is flooded and her son's garage is full of muddy water. My daughter and SIL house is alright although two blocks away the main street from our city to the next city has been closed.

I-80 was closed at Fairfield going west, and only one or two lanes in the same spot going east. Most county/country streets are closed.

An evacuation center was opened as evidently many homes, apartments and condo's were flooded. Just found out that some neighbors in my complex had water in their places...I am on the second floor so didn't.

A lot of people here are evidently without power but so far I have power.

I pray the next storm will not be as nasty.

Bodi, where do you live? Family members in Walnut Creek have had their sump pumps going. Hope they are alright. And certainly hope you are!

Faina, I will be home tomorrow, hopefully we can catch up with each other.

Hope everyone is able to stay warm, dry and safe.

Glad that Faina and LoveItaly are okay.I live in Palo Alto, which is south of SF about 25 miles. We live about a half mile from the bay and are surrounded by urban streams that flow into the bay. We are considered to be in a flood plain. We were flooded about 10 years ago when one of these streams crested. At that time they called it a "100 year" flood. Yesterday, because of a very high tide and all the rain one of the main streams flooded parts of Palo Alto and almost crested right around the corner from us. We got the call to voluntarily evacuate. We ended up being okay, but it was a bit nerve racking for a few hours. I've never seen the creek that full and violent! I walked over to see the creek late in the afernoon and it had dropped a lot. We lost power for 5 hours and our cable just came back this morning. We are bracing for another storm this morning, but they say it is a quicker moving one and won't dump as much rain on us this time. We are very lucky to have dodged this one! Peace to all of you on this wet and soggy New Year's Day!

My wife & I had dinner in The City on Chestnut street for New Year's Eve (in bed by 11:30pm however). The City looked quite normal (if "normal" is possible in SF). Lots of young folks around with the ladies in their "little black sleeveless dresses" and the men in blue jeans (don't understand that combo). Didn't even take umbrellas into the city (we live in San Mateo - on the Burlingame border)

This morning there is lots of lumpy sky. Had to put the windshield wipers on for a very short bit on the way to the exercise gym this morning. So far no rains.

Hi Bill, I read about Palo Alto. Imagine south of SF is now having the storm?

We are having rain right now and it is getting stronger. Very dark and gloomy.

The worse areas that have been hit are Sonoma and Napa Counties. And from reports I-80 by Tahoe/Reno will be closed for a couple of days.

I sure hope everyone survives this without any big problems.

And in the meantime areas of Texas and Oklahoma are dealing with terrible wildfires.

What an end to 2005 and beginning of 2006. Best wishes to all of you.

So, how windy is it on top of the East Bay Hills? Hubby just found one of our carports on the neighbors roof! Going to help him, back later.

LoveItaly,
Yeah, this new storm is apparently splitting up with a section going northwards and a section going south. The forecasters this morning were saying that the south bay would be getting a lot of rain. So far we've had very little rain, but the wind has been amazingly strong.
bodi,
Our neighbor's covered patio ended up on his roof today. I hope your situation is okay and that you are staying safe. I'm beginning to worry about our solar panels for the pool flying off! Every so often we get a gust that really shakes things loose and I hear scary sounds coming from the roof. I expect to see Dorothy and her house flying by any moment!

5 :30 PM Napa wine country time
2nd storm now here-is not supposed to be as bad as last one.
Dumped 7 inches in St Helena area.-
Roads up and down valley open now,,
Lots of Vineyards flooded but will not harm vines as long as temporary.
Russian River Area really hurt worse, some roads still closed. Healdsburg some damage but Guernyville inundated .Historically this town gets 'flooded"about every other year but this is a bad one...
Heavy rains plus "all time high" ocean tides further impedes run off.
Lot of downtown Napa damage really caused by overflowing of Napa Creek
which dumps into Napa River under the new First St. Bridge..Alot of this was supposed to be avoided by the BIG flood control project going on for last 3-4 years, However, some of delay due to "politics" and CA budget crisis...
all this is supposed to be "fixed" by 2010---we will see !!!!

I've been thinking of Marilyn, Faina, LoveItaly and all of our beloved CA Fodorites. I'm also very concerned about the people in OK City. As I type this, I'm hearing on CNN that a terrible grass fire is now reaching inside OK City. As LoveItaly said on another thread, it's one extreme or another. While our CA friends are getting drenched, here in TX and OK it's been unusually dry. I feel so badly for those who have lost their homes and/or lives due to these awful situations. Best wishes for all to keep safe.

All is well here in Benicia except the ground is so saturated that there is moisture coming up from my slab foundation & making a patch of carpet soggy. Scary storm Sat. a.m. but not so bad now. Hope all our CA Fodorites stay warm & dry and our OK/TX ones out of fires way.

Rain, rain go away ! We had a tiny break
yesterday from about 4-6pm-no sun, but enough to get out and check around the house.

Here in Sonoma County you just cannot
go anywhere. There are road closures all over the place. It certainly gives a new meaning to "you can't get there from here!". MrR5 had to try 3 different ways to get to an open, unflooded grocery store about 2 hours ago. I'm a bit south and just enough east of Guerneville where the Russian River is flooding. Some homes are underwater to the first floor. Pictures of folks traveling streets in canoes
and rowboats ! In my area most of the streams and creeks overflowed yesterday. We are quite lucky that we sit just high enough to have avoided
it. Friends out on the coast report
20' swells. And the wind-the hummingbird
feeders swinging wildly all day.

Wish we could send it over to OK and put out those darn fires! Glad to hear LoveItaly,Betsy,Faina,Bill and traveler24 are all safe and dry as well! Lucky Kal is in Hawaii and Marilyn is in India.

Hoping Marilyn's house, near a creek in Marin County, is safe and dry.

Have anybody heard from Marylin? I hope she's OK.

HEllo, LoveItaly! Stay dry... ummm... not inside though

P_M, I heard on TV there are houses on fire in the Oklahoma city. How awful!

It seems the Bay Area will be getting a break, tomorrow is the last day of heavy rains for a while. Just when I got a new raincoat...

Hi everyone, the rainstorm has left Vacaville. It is still raining but no wind and more of a normal type of rain. Oh gads, I sure wish we could send this storm to Oklahoma and Texas. I just read on CNN that Oklahoma City has houses that have burned. How horrifying! Fire worries me more than floods do for some reason.

R5, I am glad to know that you are alright..and sure hope Marilyn's house is.

Bill, I understand your concern about the swimming pool solar panels, I had those on my roof at my house in Benicia. What a horrible worry.

Cobbie, read the mobile home park downtown got flooded. Hope all the senior citizens are alright. And saw that East 2nd St was flooded also. I am sorry that you have water coming up through the foundation. If it is bad I would call a company that deals with this and have them bring over their large fans to dry out the carpeting, pad and concrete slab so that you do not end up with mold.

Traveler, do you think the flooding problem in Napa will ever get properly fixed? This has been going on for so long. Many years ago I lost my dear Godmother to the floods in Yountville.

I just saw that a Vacaville resident, a CHP officer, was killed in the Santa Cruz mountains. He was going on a call regarding a problem about a car that was stuck in mud or something. A CalTran worker showed up also. Some man came along the road, lost control, hit the CalTran truck which hit the CHP officer and killed him. The CalTran worker has two broken legs. The driver of the car that caused the accident was killed also. The CHP officer was a father of two young children. Another sad and tragic story.

My good wishes to all, may everyone be safe. And somehow may the fires in Oklahoma and Texas be brought under control. It is horrifying regarding these two complete different situations our areas are dealing with. Cyberhugs to everyone.
