Buying wine New York City
We will be staying at the Doubletree Suites Times Square in a few weeks. Where would be the best place to buy a couple of bottles of wine near the hotel?
|
Morrells is close - 48th between 5th and 6th - in Rockefeller center.
http://morrellwine.com/ They have a great selection but it can be a bit pricy. Also keep in mind, wine stores in NYC can only sell wine. Snacks are sold in grocery/delis (the 2nd most asked question) |
Thanks for your help.

I have never shopped at the following places but Morrell's is very expensive. There are two wine stores on 8th Avenue between 46th and 49th Street. I am sure they will have something for you. |
Morrell's is not inexpensive but we've found it has a better selection than most wine shops. It really depends on what you're looking for.

I would suggest Flat-Iron Wines for a discerning collection at (sometimes) reasonable prices. http://flatiron-wines.com
B'way btwn 21st and 22nd. |
For a large selection of inexpensive wines try Warehouse Wines on Broadway and 8th Street. For a good selection of wines in general try Astor Place.
And there is always Trade Joe's for a selection of inexpensive wines. |
And remember that you can call any store for free delivery if you know what you want.
There is a good wine shop in Manhattan Plaza on Ninth Avenue north of 42nd street. |
I don't think the OP is going to want to go on an epic journey downtown just to buy a couple of bottles of wine, but if he/she does, then I think the best destination would be Trader Joe's on 14th Street between 3rd and 4th Aves. (south side of the street, between the NYU dorm and the Trader Joe's grocery).
But the Manhattan Plaza store may be your best bet. You will find much better prices if you head west to the residential areas on the border of Times Square. There's also a wine store on Broadway between 57th and 58th Streets on the west side of the street, but it's a little expensive (about 20% more than the prices I am used to paying). I know there are other wine shops in the area, but I don't know exactly where they are. The area becomes residential after 8th Avenue. FYI: Liquor stores in NYC sell more than wine. They also sell all alcohol. Just not food. |
>>>Liquor stores in NYC sell more than wine. They also sell all alcohol.<<<
Except beer, for some bizarre reason! |
<<Also keep in mind, wine stores in NYC can only sell wine.>>
No no no. They sell distilled spirits too. The distinction you're missing is that there ARE wine-only stores in NYC and there are "liquor stores" that sell both wine and liquor. |
And there are supermarkets that sell Chateau Diana which used to call itself a wine and is now a "wine product."
We can all say thanks to the SLA! |
Thanks for all your help. You have given me lots of choices. I don't want anything too expensive.
