Buying a home in NJ...any thoughts on Nutley, Bloomfield, Clifton, Rutherford, North Bergen, or Cliffside Park?

My husband and I are looking to buy a home in one of these areas...Nutley, Clifton, Bloomfield, Rutherford, Cliffside Park, or North Bergen. I just want to hear people's thoughts/impressions of these areas...and any other useful info potential residents may want to know. Thank you!

Hi, I grew up near Teaneck. Cliffside Park is right next to Fort Lee and Edgewater, which are becoming such developed and beautiful towns, and so close to the GWB and Manhattan. Just thought that would increase property value? The other towns, I kinda think of as more central.

We rent an apartment in Bloomfield (3 blocks from Glen Ridge) and it's a nice area, great park (Brookdale), but there are some areas that are "not so great" if you head toward the other end of Bloomfield towards Newark. I think Nutley is a better choice, but more expensive..

Thanks for the input so far! We currently own a condo in Hudson County but want to buy a home. I like more suburban areas and my husband likes more urban areas...so we are trying to find a place to compromise on. We don't want to go too far from Hoboken or JC because of jobs...niether of us like long drives to work stuck in traffic...who does! We are looking to spend no more than $400,000 for 2/3 bed, 2/3 bath, finished basement, in "move in condition." If anyone has any other suggestions for us...and/or more input on the places I mentioned...including schools, taxes, property values, conveniences, travel times, etc...we would really appreciate it! Thanks!

Instead of going farther into NJ, what about going north along the Hudson towards Rockland County. Still close to the GWB and beautiful..

I would love to stay closer to the Hudson but areas seem to be more expensive there. We are considering Cliffside Park...which is along the Hudson...but we're not sure if we will find something in our price range. Fairview is another...but don't know much about it. Let me know if there are any other affordable areas in that region.

Why not look in west orange/south orange? Affordable homes and an easy drive to Hoboken/JC (20 min) and a 20 min commute to penn station by train. Definitely less expensive than Bergen County, with lots of NYC transplants and South Orange has a real downtown with a movie theater and excellenet restaurants.

Thanks for the tip on West and South Orange. We're adding it to our "to be considered" list.

If anyone knows of specific areas that are more or less desirable in these towns...please let me know. Thanks!

Some might suggest Tenafly, NJ, which is close enough to NYC. In any event, good luck.
