Burp Castle -- Beer in NYC
Am headed to NYC next weekend and, as always, looking for good beer watering holes. Our favorite so far is Ginger Man, and we've also visited Blind Tiger and a few others. One place that continues to stump us, though, is Burp Castle. On our 2 trips to NYC, we sought out Burp Castle only to find it closed. The bartender at Blind Tiger thought that they had strange hours, but we were never able to get in touch with anyone via phone. Anyone know if this place still opens, and if so, when?
Any other "good beer" suggestions are also welcome. Thanks! |
I don't know what their hours are, but I believe they are still open. If you get there and find they are closed, you might also try McSorley's right down the street or Brewski's. Both also have great beer selections. Another good choice on First Ave in the same vicinity is dba.

Peculiar Pub and DBA are favorite beer places downtown. Another great time is found at the Brooklyn Brewery in Williamsburg on Friday nights...
There's also Bavarian Hall (a beer garden) in Astoria. |
I also recommend d.b.a. on First Avenue between 2nd & 3rd Streets. Good beer selection, even better whiskey/bourbon/scotch selection.
You'll find the best beer selection at Peculier Pub, on Bleecker Street near LaGuardia. Over 525 different beers to choose from. For great German beer in a fun "beer hall" atmosphere, visit Zum Schneider on Avenue C at 7th St. Not a huge selection, but authentic (and served in the proper glasses). In terms of beer selection, I do NOT suggest McSorley's, which only serves "light" and "dark" beer out of dirty glasses (2 beers, total). Sure, it's a famous old watering hole, but in my opinion the beer is nasty. |
Thanks for all the replies so far -- did try Peculier last time and really enjoyed it (and the surrounding area). Sounds like dba might be a necessary stop this time. Cheers!
