Burlington, VT - Quebec

Spending a few days in Burlington then travelling on to Quebec. Which route to Quebec might be better, quicker, easier at the border crossing or even the most scenic. Is there a time going through the border crossing that the wait may not be as long as others (i.e. Is there a rush hour at border crossing.) Another question about tolls, any going over the border?

No tolls. It's hard to say about border waits. My boss just got back from a trip and used Montreal's airport. She said it took an hour to get through customs going up, and 1.5 hours coming back.
If you want scenic, take Route 2 through the Champlain Islands. Just after you cross into NY State, you'll see the Rouses Point entrance station. Use that border crossing rather than I-87.

Thanks for the info, should I expect a much shorter wait time at the Rouses Point crossing than the I-87 crossing. What would be the best route to take after the Rouses Point crossing to get to Quebec City.
Another option according to my map would be to travel to St. Albans, Vt and then to Enosburg Falls, Richford and then crossing over at Abercom or Highwater. Do you know anything about this route. According to my map this is a scenic route.

Definitely avoid 87. We were in Montreal last month and took 87. Sunday morning, 10:30 am, and it took over an hour and a half to get through through the border. We were kicking ourselves for not taking one of the smaller routes in Vermont. We crossed the river and drove down the islands back to Burlington and noticed that there was a border crossing off 225 that was virtually empty.

We live in north central Vermont and try when possible to avoid the I-89 and I-87 border crossings which tend to get crowded in both directions. The smaller crossings seldom have more than one other car in line.
We sometimes go north on Rte 108 above enosburg Falls and cross the border there. We have also crossed north of Richford and at North Troy.
It is a pretty agricultural area, quite a lot of hills so not fast driving. Once you cross over into Canada this far east you would probably want to go north toward Rte 10 then east on Rte 10 to connect with 55 and 20 to go to Quebec
The area around Lake Memphremagog is very scenic. There is a Benedictine Abbey near the village of Austin on the western shore.
Lac Broome is also a pretty area north of the richford border crossing.

If you have time to order their brochure it is good.

If you go west from I-89 in Vermont at Exit 21 (Swanton) on Rte 78 there is a crossing before the one at Rouse's point, just north of Alburg, Vt, and also another west of Rouse's Point before you reach I-87. From these or the Rouse's Point crossing you would go north to 202 then west to the intersection of 15 and take that north toward Montreal. this is a quicker, easier route than the one to the east.

Thank you all for the great advise. As we are anxious to get to Quebec I think we will take one of the crossings near Alburg, VT. I think from Burlington the drive up through Grand Isle on Rt. 2 might be very nice. Do you think I might run into a lot of traffic on this route on a Tuesday morning....if so we could go the other way, Rt 89 get of at Swanson and make our way over.

Border traffic is generally much worse coming back into the US than going into Canada. Weekends are crazy, 2-3 hours coming back in throough NY State at I-87. I took a tiny border crossing a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday morning and waited "only" one hour. Coming into Canada a few days earlier at a different border, we only waited about 10 minutes, but it looked like an hour or more's wait in the US direction.
The websites (US and Canadian)tha list border wait times only list the major border crossings

Traffic in the Champlain Islands should be fine on a Tuesday morning. If you cross over to Rouse's Point in New York to go through the border there, look out for "Fort Blunder"

Just wanted to follow up to my original request for help. We enjoyed a lovely week in Vermont and Quebec City and were fortunate to have some very nice weather. From Vermont we took the I89 to the border on a Tuesday morning. Traffic was very light so we decided to stay with this route. There were 4 cars in front of us at the border crossing so we moved through pretty quickly. Upon returning from Canada we got off Auto Route 15 and made our way over to 221 where we crossed the border. This was on a Friday at lunch and there were about 8 cars in front of us. It moved quickly and we made our way back on to I87 in N.Y.
