Burlington Vermont was voted #1 city to live on Cable show today!

For those of you who live, or plan to vacation in Burlington Vermont, it was voted the #1 place to live that has it all today on a cable program, listing the top 10 places to live......Chapel Hill North Carolina came in second place........The key players in choosing these cities were employment, crime, neighborhoods, population, etc.......

I guess my husband and I will have to put this town on our list of places to vacation...

Funny...Portland, Oregon was recently listed as the #1 city to live in by Money Magazine. I guess all cities can be number 1 if you read enough magazines.

I saw the show Louise is referring to. On Sundays at 11 a.m. (CST) A&E has a "Top 10" show. If you haven't seen it, you might consider tuning in. It's usually fun.

Please remember, it's ONLY ONE OPINION.

Here's the list:

A&E's "Top 10 Cities To Have It All:

1. Burlington, Vermont
2. Chapel Hill, N.C.
3. Austin, Texas
4. Annapolis, Maryland
5. Madison, Wisconsin
6. Charlottesville, Virginia
7. Eugene, Oregon
8. Portland, Maine
9. Maryville, Tennessee
10. Fort Collins, Colorado

(seems universities had a lot to do with it)

I am dumbfounded: Charlottesville ... Annapolis ... Maryville ... Chapel Hill. I know these places ... how in the wrold did they make the top 10? Charlottesvilee has UVA and that is it ... it resides in a redneck area, very rural, nothing to do. Why is that such a great place to be? Paint me mystified.

For those of you interested in moving to Chapel Hill, the average home price last year was $311,000. If you want to buy a new home add $3,000 for a school impact fee.

The town is having a hard time filling some job vacancy because of the housing price.

Shame on A&E for such a ridiculous list. I'm as mystified as L on this one. I would not dream of choosing most of these places to live in. What about vibrant streets, cultural opportunities, diverse population, restaurants and nightlife, open-mindedness toward differences (Madison and Austin I've heard may be better than some of the others in this regard)...I know that MOST and don't think ANY of these have decent public transportation. Do any of these have a Chinatown or Little Italy? To each their own but give me Philadelphia, Boston or even (with enough money) New York City (to name three) any day over these.

Daniel,

Again, to each his own. I think you're missing the point here in some respects. While I love visiting each of the cities that you mentioned, I certainly wouldn't want to raise my children there (again, this is MY opinion). I could care less if there's public transportation and 24/7 activity. At this point in my life (age 38, 2 kids, 1 husband) I'd rather have clean air, safe streets, good schools and relatively affordable housing. How many of these places have you personally visited? We live near Ft. Collins and I wouldn't mind living there. It's one drawback is that everyone else wants to live there, too and the traffic has become out-of-control in the past ten years. Looks like its popularity caught city officials by surprise and they still haven't come to their senses. Guess I'll take my "boring" little Nebraska town after all.

HI

Of the 10, I've only been to Burlington, Annapolis, Charlottesville and Chapel Hill. I think they're pretty places of moderate charm (although friends I know in the latter two that I know are finding the traffic on the increase; beauty of good public transit is you don't have to worry about traffic at all), but I'd much rather live in the midst of the diversity of the cities I mentioned and would want any kids I might have to experience the same. A chacun son goût.

Best regards. DAN
