Bummed about the weather this week/weekend

We are supposed to be headed to NYC on Wednesday evening to arrive via Penn Station on Thursday morning (after a brief overnight near the Ronkonkoma train station.) The purpose of our trip is to see The Producers Saturday night. I have super Center Orchestra row c and row d seats. The weather is supposed to be a bit "wintry" and kinda throws a wrench in all of our outdoor plans. Of course, I have planned for museum and shopping time too, but just not sure what to expect. Don't want to cancel, but between the hassle of spring break travel and the "it's not spring in NYC yet" weather, we are having second thoughts. Please offer words of encouragement!

Before I'm drawn and quartered, forgive me for failing to mention just where the inclement weather will exist. That would be New York City. SORRY!!!

janie Mar 15th, 2004 02:17 PM

twobluecats,
the weather we're expecting over the next few days is actually normal for NYC at this time of the year, or just a bit below--the warm weather we've had is the anomaly! March is never spring in NY--come to think of it, often April and May aren't either-- we're a place that often goes straight from winter to summer... What outddor plans had you made for this weekend?

On the plus side, take advantage of the fact that you will not be overrun by lots of other tourists--at least not nearly as many as Summer or christmas week!
Enjoy yourself

Just bring some footgear that's suitable for wet conditions, be flexible with your schedule, and take advantage of breaks in the weather.

HowardR Mar 15th, 2004 02:28 PM

Relax, you're coming to New York City, not some remote wilderness. Don't let a little winter weather deter you. It doesn't deter us locals.

weenie57 Mar 15th, 2004 02:39 PM

Forget about it! It's MARCH! It's always yucky in March. You'll have a great time anyway...Dress warm, bring boots. Enjoy!

Patrick Mar 15th, 2004 02:50 PM

Hey, with those seats for The Producers how could you not be able to ignore the weather and have a good time?

salgal Mar 15th, 2004 05:31 PM

We flew into La Guardia lastyear at this time and they had gotten 6 inches of snow that same day. Didn't even realize it until we went to Central PArk and actually saw sbow ont he ground. I wouldn't let it cancel your trip. You can't alsways believe what the weather man syas anyway! have fun! Pack warm clothes and enjoy it!

Quit your wining and count your lucky stars. You're off on an adventure!!!!!!!!!!!!

OaktownTraveler Mar 15th, 2004 06:21 PM

twobluecats...you are joking right?

I'll call the theatre and make sure that they keep the dome closed so you won't get wet or get too cold...

BTW: You know the big guy upstairs hears your every complaint so THANK HIM.

Those are my words of encouragement.

Unbelievable,
Oaktown Traveler

If you decide to cancel, I'll be willing to take you super Center Orchestra seats to the Producers. Just trying to help..............

You really can't make "outdoor plans" in NY in March. We usually get one last winter blast and won't be disappointed this year!

Thanks for all the thoughtful replies. As a native Texas I know all too well about topsy turvy weather. As an airline employee, I also know more than I would care to about just how much inclement weather conditions combined with heavy loads means a sometimes not so pleasant travel experience. We have traveled to NYC many times, even in New York and knew our chances for weather going in. However, one point I failed to mention earlier is that my husband is fighting bronchitis right now and the air travel and wintry conditions won't do much good for him. Nevertheless, I appreciate the response and look forward to many more useful and kind forums in the future! It's a shame that some choose to take every opportunity to be condescending and sarcastic--thank goodness most here are just kind souls helping each other out and learning new stuff along the way! THANKS AGAIN!

twobluecats-Your original post left out the info that you were coming from Texas and that your husband was sick, etc. Your original post sounds stupid. Sorry. An adult that can't handle a little snow and make it to the theater? Don't mean to be harsh, but you asked for it. People live with and travel in snowy conditions all the time. If your husband is sick, but able to travel, just pack the heavy clothes and the Halls. Then post a new question: What to do in NYC in bad weather? You will get a dozen suggestions.

twobluecats:

I am sorry that your husband suffers with bronchitis.

If you would have mentioned this and the fact that you hail from Texas(my mom's home state) you would have gotten an entirely differnt response from me.

Most people here are caring and helpful.

Some people here are also sensitive and in no mood for what your initial post presents...which some, myself included have already addressed.

Have a wonderful time!

twobluecats,

Frankly, I don't think the weather will be that bad. I don't think you have to worry. It looks like there may be some rain/slushy snow Thurs. night into Fri., but nothing much to speak of. The weekend looks sunny and near 50 degrees. It doesn't seem like it will be windy or blustery. So, I think you and your husband will be fine. Enjoy yourself! The Producers is great!

wantsomesun Mar 16th, 2004 08:59 AM

We're having a real snowstorm today, but yesterday the temp was 54 and today it's 31, but that's New York this time of year.

I am so sorry to hear your husband is not feeling well, but load him up on meds and come anyway.

The temps are supposed to come up and by Sat will be about 55.

Since the weather here can be warm/cold easily, I would suggest layers, so you can add more if it is colder than expected.

A friend was in town last weekend and got last minute tickets for the Producers and said it was the best show she has ever seen, so you will have a GREAT TIME.

So don't mind the weather and come and have fun. You'll probably enjoy seeing the first of the flowers coming up, right now they are in the snow!

WE ARE GOING!!!! Packed and ready to leave Dallas at 1:50 p.m. Thanks again everyone for the advise. I can hardly wait to get there. Of course, we overnight in Islip tonight, but we'll take a train in first thing in the morning.

Question? Should we purchase train tickets (both ways) in advance or just purchase them at the station day of travel?

HowardR Mar 17th, 2004 04:00 AM

Purchase the tickets when you get to the train station. Now....relax and have a good time! So, it's going to snow again. So what?

LoriNY Mar 17th, 2004 05:05 AM

Just an FYI, the ticket office may be closed when you get to the station. If this is the case, make sure that you buy your tickets from the ticket vending machines. If you buy them on the train there is now a $2 surcharge per ticket.
