Bugs in Utah NPs?
This might sound weird….are there bugs in S Utah in Sept? What should we expect? We are coming from the East Coast, where mosquitoes can eat you alive after sunset. What was your experience there?
Thanks |
Most if not all the NP are at relatively high altitude and it's dry. Only very close to streams are bugs a potential problem.

This is great news! Thanks a lot Michael!

We saw no bugs at Zion or Bryce. And it was in the summer and rained. The mosquitoes were home eating our neighbors, I think. (No nasty crawly things either, if that is your personal phobia)

Hi xyz99
If you going to visit the National Parks, may I suggest you bring along water, sunscreen and insect repellent, its a wild world out there! Have Fun GP |
I've camped quite a lot at Zion and Bryce during the summer and I don't remember encountering mosquitoes. I would have remembered since I always get bitten up. I can't remember insects being a problem. I'm not sure if our encounter with some yellow jackets was at Zion or Yosemite. My husband barbecued some chicken and a yellow jacket dove into the piece of chicken on his fork, snatched a piece of it and flew off. He ended up finishing his meal in the car with a few more yellow jackets banging on the windows. I do remember that Zion is very hot in the summer, perfect for camping. You don't freeze at night. It is one of my favorite NPs and I recommend it highly.

Thank you all.
Annetti, that's so funny :) I'm sure your husband didn't think so when the yellow jackets attacked him, but that makes for good memories. We will not camp, but we'll bring sunscreen + bugs repelent, anyway. And I know, plenty of water - it's desert country! Thanks again |
We've been attacked at both Yosemite and Zion by yellowjackets while cooking. More times in Zion, but I wouldn't worry unless you were cooking outdoors.
