Buffalo Waterfront

Planning an overnight trip to Buffalo. Want to explore the waterfront area. Where to stay and what to do?

I hope you're talking about summer!

As far as visiting the waterfront, that subject is a sore one for Buffalonians. Finally, plans are moving forward to build up the waterfront with a casino and other plans. However, for the time being, there is only the Erie Basin Marina. It's a nice place to walk along the lake, sit and have a beer (or ice cream), watch the boats, look at the downtown skyline, and just chill. You can also take a boat ride on the Miss Buffalo or Niagara Clipper, both of which leave from the marina.

Also, if you find it interesting, there is a naval park with a ship and submarine that you can explore.

There are no shops, just one restaurant, The Hatch.

The closest hotel is the Adam's Mark. It's within walkin distance of the marina; however, I think it's a bit removed from the rest of dowtown and the Chippewa District (restaurant and bar district).

Your other option for "waterfront" is to go to the foot of W. Ferry Street and walk out on the breakwall. It separates the Niagara River from the Black Rock Canal, goes under the peace bridge, and out into Lake Erie. It's kind of cool and makes for a good walk. Lake narrows down into the river just about under the bridge. Intense currents there!

It sounds like with only one night you won't have time for much else, but I'll be glad to help you if you give more information of exactly how long you'll be here and what you like to do!

Here's a picture of the Buffalo Lighthouse, which you can view from the marina (I think it's the oldest on the Great Lakes)!

drive for another hour and a half and explore the Toronto waterfront. I am only half-kidding. Buffalo has yet to really develop its waterfront so there is a distinct lack of accomodations, shopping or attractions. Like BuffaloGirl said, it may be good to just stroll, watch the boats and relax. Not much else going on.

Stay at the Grand Island Holiday Inn - right on the waterfront but not downtown with a nice view of the water. If the weather is nice try Niawanda Park - right on the waterfront and in close distance to nice restaurants (The Shores)and makes for a great walk and a great place to picnic and relax. Right across the street are a lot of little restaurants (very casual) like Mississippi Muds for hot dogs etc.

There is another restaurant on the water besides the Hatch. It is Shanghi Red's, a very nice spot for a good dinner with great water views.
