Budget travel in October?

My husband and I want to go on a week-long vacation the first week October and we are pretty much open to anything. We are trying to keep it cheap though. We'd be flying out of Hartford or Boston. Any suggestions or tips?

Well, the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland are closeby and going rates for accommodations would be mid-season that time of year, entering low season on or about 10/15. If you're nature lovers, then you'll fall in love with Cape Breton Island. The entire province of NL is amazing and one could easily spend several days in St. John's and surrounding area. For more information, do a search on the Canada board.

carriewp1,
Perhaps you could give us an idea of the types of things you and your husband like to do. Are you active, do you like the outdoors? Do you like museums, beaches?

We love museums, history, and the vibrance of cities in general. We like to hike and bike and also like to plunk down on the beach. So we really are open to anything. Like Retired teacher suggested, we are looking into Canada...Nova Scotia (we can take a fast Cat boat up there from Maine), but we aren't married to that yet and just looking for suggestions. Thanks!

My thought was that Carrie and husband should try to avoid the fall foliage pilgrimage in the NE. Most of the nice accommodations will already be booked solid and what remains isn't going to be cheap. However, fall foliage seekers would be leaving NS/NL by then and accommodations there should be available at out-of-season rates with a couple of good weather weeks remaining before winter sets in.

Carrie also might want to look for deals in Florida and along the SE coast. St. Augustine, Charleston and Savannah are very historic cities near beaches if they could snag a cheap flight?

We live in Massachusetts in the heart of Fall Foliage. We can step out our back door and see an array of gorgeous colors...so we don't need to travel for that. We are looking at NS and now have turned to San Francisco. Thanks for all of your input!

just FYI, Oct 15-Dec 10 (except Thanksgiving) or so is time for cheap flights to Europe. You can probably get a good deal if you're flexible and interested in going there around that time.

Great time to visit the coast of CAlifornia... some of our nicest weather... and off season rates. Places like Santa Barbara and Carmel will be beautiful and NOT crowded.

Come to San Diego..first week of October is gorgeous and warm and the tourists have gone and the resort prices are cheap..
Jet Blue flies direct from Boston to SD and you can play in the ocean..hike Torrey Pines State reserve, take a harbor cruise and eat some of the best mexican food..all for cheap!
I see that Expedia has the Hotel La Jolla for $145 a night but you can get other hotels for a lot less..
I can give you the best cheaps eats and places to go for next to nothing!

TT is right, San Diego would be great. So would San Francisco, Monterey and Carmel. Southwest would be fun (you could fly into Tucson or Albuquerque).
