Hi can anyone recommend a budget hotel in New York? I'm looking at spending no more then $100 a night for a double/twin room. Cheers.

You might better try Priceline. Check biddingfortravel.com ?? to find where your chance of two beds is the best. Look at Super8, and there are a few hotels (Holiday Inn/Super8) over in LI City (I think that's the name of it) that have rates near $100. Good luck.

I'm not sure what the price is exactly (depends on when you're going), but the Marcel on 24th and 3rd is excellent for the money. Hip, interesting clientele, and very clean (though small) rooms decorated very well. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised. Also, the location is excellent, as you're close to both the 6 and RW subway lines, as well as 23rd, which has a crosstown bus. I have recommended this hotel to visiting budget-minded friends (I moved here a couple of years ago) and all have been satisfied.

I know I have said this on other NY threads many times so sorry for the repetition. The Super 8 Times Square is a great value for budget travellers. Clean, excellent location, decent FREE continental breakfast and very reasonable prices.

The Travel Inn on W42nd St. is around $100 a night, with free parking and just a couple blocks away from Times Square. My cousin, her husband and 3 kids stayed there and said it was clean and comfortable. There's also a deli right there for lunch/munchies.

Also try www.hotels.com for other ideas.

Check biddingfortravel and then head over to Priceline, where your $100 can go much farther, or you can get a decent place for far less. People have been winning the Murray Hill Eat Suites hotel for $60-80, I've stayed there for twice that amount and thought it a good value.

Just remember that whatever price you get, you have to add 13-15% for taxes, so you're really talking about an $85 rate.

Yes, PL bids do have taxes added on, just as any other hotel bill does. The most recent winner of Murray Hill East won with a bid of $61 and actually paid $77. Since PL's fee is per transaction, not per night, the per-night average would have been lower for a multi-night bid.

When are you planning on coming?

Asuming it's not in high season you should be fine with the above advice. If it's when the city is especially busy - for $100 you will either have to do Priceline for perhaps a 2.5* - or check out New Jersey

You'd be surprised at the difference in quality b/w the various options for $100. At the top end, bidding on Priceline. You could wind up with a a 3 or possibly 4* mainstream hotel. Just make sure you read biddingfortravel.com or betterbidding.com so you know what you're doing.

In the middle tier are the Applecorehotels.com including Super 8, Comfort Inn Midtown, Red Roof etc or other midtown, no frills options.

Then there are some inns/b & bs like Second Home on Second, Chelsea Lodge etc. where you can find that price for some rooms. Then there are smaller hotels in less accessible areas of the city (ie the Newton at the upper end of the upper west side).

Finally, there are some not bad options outside Manhattan, the best IMO being in New Jersey, either in Secaucus that's just a bus ride away or in Weekhawken that's a ferry ride across the Hudson.

I just spent a nite at the Comfort Inn on 46th Street between 6th and 7th. $89.99 (AAA dicount), with taxes came to $104.25. It is no frills, basic, small room, but comfortable.

I can vouch for the Comfort Inn MIDTOWN on W 46, which the two previous posters mentioned; it's the only all-nonsmoking hotel in Manhattan, or was the time I stayed there.

Their rates vary tremendously by date, and after I made my own res I found that the rate dropped 3 times before my actual date of travel, so I re-did the res. each time. IRC, I reserved the room at $120 and ended up at $89.

In general the AppleCore group of hotels are very good values: recently remodeled, basic but clean.

I have stayed at the Days Inn and HOJO on 8th Ave. Excellent location on the C E subway and 1 long block from Times Square. Taxes added $17 on my last $111 rate. Priceline also can only get you a one bed room, looks like the poster needs 2 beds??

I took furrychick's request as spending no more than $100 per night for a "double/twin" room as being a request for a double bed or twin beds. A winning bid at Priceline should satisfy that request.

Priceline says that it guarentees a room for two (maybe one bed maybe two). Most times my rooms through Priceline have two beds or at checkin staff at desk will ask if I would like a king/queen or two doulbes - even in NYC.

But if you'll have a car, the Travel Inn suggested by wantsomesun would be wonderful. I didn't have a car but my daughter drove into town from Elizabeth, NJ and parking there was $39 per day!

ziggydo, I'm assuming your $39/day parking was a typo. That's not a bargain. If that was the charge, next time tell your daughter to go to iconparking.com and find a better deal or use the park and lock garage on 42 st. just as you exit the Lincoln tunnel.

hi there- i have stayed a few times at the super 8 too... it's worth checking out- i got a great deal on the price and the hotel is in times square so very convenient... breakfast is included in the price!!! i'd say quite a good deal! Friends were happy with their stay at the Lower East Side Howard Johnson, and I believe it was less than $100.

also if you want a truly convenient location though check out www.applecorehotels.com- they also have a red roof and la quinta very close to macy's and penn station! in addition to the super 8 i mentioned before... and they look like clean, nice hotels!

I stay at the HOJO on 8th, not the one by Penn St. Right on the subway , 1 long block to Times Square and walkable to a lot of theaters.
