Budget hotels around Union Square
 

Hello All.....I am going to SF for about five days and want to stay in a budget hotel near Union Square...where there is parking. Does anyone have any ideas?

Union Square is not the cheapest place to find a hotel. The only one that comes to mind is Hotel Diva at $120 per night

What do you mean by "budget" ? Budget is a relative thing - how much do you want to spend?

And I hope you don't mean free parking.

It's been a few years, but we got a good price at the delightful Hotel Monaco. ... Small, beautifully decorated, convenient location.

This is good Priceline territory. Check it out on www.biddingfortravel.com. Study the bidding process thoroughly. If you decide to use PL, a five-night stay may be difficult. You may have to bid for a three-night and a two-night stay.

We recently stayed at a hotel near Union Square. Parking was $38 per day, plus 24% tax, plus tip for the valet. Whoa! We ended up taking pubic transit instead, and for us, it worked out well. But boy oh boy, parking is so-o-o expensive in downtown SF!

Incidentally, we stayed at the Renaissance Parc 55 - very nice and quite reasonable on the weekends ($169, I believe) but much higher during the week. I am definitely not calling this a "budget" hotel, but I wanted to let you know about the cost of parking, which should probably be figured into the equation.

We stayed in SF last September on both ends of a trip to Napa. We booked both hotels on Hotwire.com. The first hotel we picked was a “4 – star” hotel by hotwire’s standards; "The Prescott" http://prescotthotel.com/ was excellent. It is just behind the St Francis off of Union Sq and has Wolfgang Puck’s SF restaurant in the ground floor (gives a little credibility). We stayed for 4 nights and had an excellent stay. We paid US$124 per night - great rate considering the hotel's website was charging substantially more, $200+ if I remember, and very reasonable for the area.

Our second stint in SF, we arrived after dinner and just needed a place to crash until our flight the next AM. Again we used hotwire and this time picked a 3-star. We stayed at the King George hotel, http://www.kinggeorge.com/index1.asp again very close to Union Sq. It is a typical budget hotel - a little bit sketchy, but clean and affordable. We paid $76 per night for that.

Hotwire is a great site if you are booking in advance because they pre-buy the rooms and sell them without marketing the brands. This leads to low prices, but from the consumer's perspective you are not aware what hotel you are paying for until after you click "pay" on your credit card... it leads to a little excitement, but if you are looking for low prices in a pre-determined area it is great. I used it about 5 times over the last two years and have never been disappointed.

I haven`t actually stayed here, but a friend goes all the time, and loves it. It`s the Econolodge (1 415 921 2505) She says the best rooms are 435 (the best) then 330, then 225. She always stays in 435. There is a view of the Golden Gate bridge, and they love to sit at the window and have breakfast.(not included by the way, but they walk to a place and get it and bring it back.) There is limited free parking, but if you don`t get there early, good luck! it`s at the corner of Divisadero and Lombard. As I stated, I haven`t stayed there myself. it`s around $100 a night, about as cheap as you are going to get in San Fran

Hotel Diva is wonderful. I've stayed there for over ten years. But, it's proabably more than $120. unless prices have dropped a lot. I used to pay $75.00-$100. a decade ago. Happy Travels!
