Budget accommodations in Valdez & Homer

Has anyone stayed at Headhunters Inn in Valdez or Windjammer Suites Motel in Homer? Any help would be appreciated.

We visited a couple who stayed there in Homer. At least their room was realy bad, dark, tiny, did not see any paint or scrubbing for many years or decades. Well, you can survive but why stay there? How much do you want to spend on your accommodations? How many people? how many nights?

I'm not sure what your budget is, but we stayed at a B&B called "Blueberry Mary's" in Valdez and it was very nice for a great price. If I recall correctly, I think we paid only $85/night, which is pretty cheap for Alaska in the summertime.

Blueberry Mary's is awesome, but be advised that her rooms only accommodate 2 people each, so unless it's 2 or 4 of you, that's out. We found most of the Valdez hotels to be about on the same level. We stayed at Aspen last year, but the Best Western looked about the same quality. None of the Valdez hotels are exceptional.

There are soooo many great B & B's in Homer, most with excellent views, that I'd advise you to check into those. We splurged and stayed at Alaskan Suites. We loved it there and we were glad we splurged. We enjoyed getting to know the family, and the amenities are terrific--we grilled our halibut fresh from the bay right on our private porch while enjoying the killer view.

If you even think you might like fishing, go halibut fishing out of Homer. We can highly recommend Captain Mike. We think it's an experience anyone visiting Homer should enjoy at least once.

We will be staying at each area 2 nights in July and there are 2 of us. I have a 2006 Toursaver, but Best Western in Valdez is already at their limit. I was trying to keep budget at around $100 a night. I've looked at several places on the internet, but was looking for personal experiences...thanks for everyone's comments.

Have you contacted Blueberry Mary? Seems like she has very reasonable rates and you'd love the location. Good luck!

Peppermint, there was a cabin in Homer that was awesome, and an unbelievable value, but I can't remember the name. It was booked already, so we couldn't stay there, but if I can find the name, I'll post it. We went to see it while there and it is as nice as the internet photos. I originally read about it on this board, so maybe if you do a Homer search you'll find it. I think it was the highest (elevation) B & B in Homer. You can learn so much by searching this board. Hope it helps~

We stayed at the Headhunters Inn in August for 2 nights. The owners were away on vacation so we never met them. The room was fine, just a regular bedroom with attached private bathroom. Breakfast is downstairs in their restaurant. You choose what you want from their menu. It seemed like a popular restaurant.

In Homer we stayed at a B&B called the Chocolate Drop, which was very nice. Their rooms vary in price, but we chose the cheapest option, which I think was $110 or $115/night if you're willing to go just slightly over budget.

If you look for B&Bs rather than hotels, you'll generally get a better price. Check out tripadvisor.com for some good reviews of various options.

Peppermint,
I did a search for you and found that the cottage we visited in Homer was one of the Wild Rose Cottages. It was very nice, reasonably priced. Also, Chocolate Drop is highly recommended on this board.

We stayed in cabin with 3moosemeadow.com. It was fairly new, two story, could sleep three or four I believe. Stayed at end of Aug and got good rate. About $125 I believe. Nice kitchen and right out in meadow by itself. Saw moose one night. They had several cabins and a rooms at their house for rent.
