Budget Accommodations in San Francisco
 

Once again, I am seeking your expertise. I am trying to find some elderly relatives budget accommodations in the city during a large medical conference at the Moscone Center at the end of May/beginning of June. They are fully able to walk, so anything SAFE within walking distance will be fine (I do have some concerns about putting them in budget places SOMA). Also, there will be free shuttle busses from most of the major hotels in the Union Square/Nob Hill area, so something close to that would also work. The only real requirements are clean, safe and made service. They need two rooms, and are looking to keep the budget at $100 or less per room.

Try Andrews Hotel. I've stayed there twice and liked it fine. Also I sent a coworker there recently who was attending a convention at Moscone Center. He also had a fine experience. It's about a 6 block walk, I think.

The Mosser is very close [2 blocks] to Moscone center and has very budget friendly rates.

They have special rates for stays of 1 week. They are kind of hard to find; if you are interested I can print directions to find those rates on here.

The rooms are small and are not luxurious but very clean. There are some rooms with private baths, but the least expensive rooms use a hall bath. The hall baths are cleaned by staff several times a day and are clean too.

We stayed there for a week during a convention that DH went to, and it was great. They even have free coffee and muffins in the lobby each morning.

I found AAA rates for the Mosser during that convention at just $100 for a shared Queen.

"The Shared Bath Queen rooms are perfect for the economy conscious traveler looking to stay in a great location at a great rate. These rooms have custom-designed platformed queen-sized beds and vanity sinks with mirrors. Down the hall you will find a private restroom and shower. Three rooms share a bathroom. Other Amenities: cable TV w/remote, Wi-Fi or DSL, hair dryer, iron & board, AM/FM radio with CD player and bathrobe. This room is appropriate for up to two people."

The location is excellent for not only the convention center, but is less than 5 minute walk to historic F trolly line, Market St and Union Sq.

Thanks, Deb. Though the price is right, they are not interested in the shared bath.

I understand, it's not for everyone. It was worth pitching it out there for consideration.

Agree with Priceline. I got a 3 star for $80.00

Even Priceline will be tough to meet that budget. A 3 star as cd mentions <i>might</i> be possible - but w/ the added taxes/fees that $80 quickly becomes $100.

Right NOW one could get a 4 star for $70-$75 plus fees. But you are talking about May/June and during a convention that is taking over the whole of the convention center. It isn't the largest convention that goes to SF, but it is a large-ish one. Rates will be high most everywhere.

I personally don't think their $100 budget is reasonable - IF they won't go for something like the Mosser. PL is probably their best bet, but they'll probably have to raise their budget a skosh.

San Francisco really isn't a $100-a-nite city. There are motels you can get for that - but they won't be near the Moscone, nor have shuttles. Plus they'll have to factor in the 14% city hotel tax . . . .

The Andrews would be fine if they can get that sort of rate - specific dates could be higher.

It is about a 7-8 block walk to Moscone West an another block to the main Moscone South halls.

I just put in June 1st to see and that's what I got. Of course you're right certain dates could be higher. But this hotel's a bit off people's radar. When I sent my coworker down last fall it was for a large convention and other hotels were sold out, Andrews was available. Also I know it gets mixed reviews, but I can vouch for 3 times good experiences there, and simply for the price and location.

Well, against my advice (can you believe THAT???) they've chosen the Beresford Hotel. I wanted to report back to you.

Iregeo: did you refer them to Tripadvisor to look at some of the reviews for the Beresford?

It's also up a hill and not that easy for walking, even to Union Square. They should try and find out where the free shuttle buses will be picking them up.

DebitNM's hotel is small, but it's only about a block and a half from Moscone Square - all flat, all highly populated and safe area. The Mosser is across the street from the San Francisco Marriott on Fourth Street.

It's an excellent suggestion.
