Bryce Canyon to Salt Lake City
 

May be driving early weekday evening from Bryce Canyon to Salt Lake City airport.

Mapquest and Google have it west on 12 then up 89 to 20, over and then staight up 15.

Yahoo doesn't take 20 but goes straight up 89 and eventually up 15.

According to my map 15 looks like a smoother major road compare to the 89 route.

Suggestions?

Either route should be fine except in a snow storm. Then, it's hard to predict which might be better-either or both could be anywhere from good to impassible. US-89 going north from U-20 is more scenic but it is also a 2-lane highway. U-20 is also 2-lane but for a shorter distance.

When I drive that route, which I often have, I take US-89 north unless I know snow conditions are worse on it than on U-20/I-15.

Thanks. Hopefully in late May a snow storm won't be an issue.

I guess if we leave a bit earlier and want a scenic drive we'll go with 89. Otherwise 15.

We drive through Utah every spring on our way home from Arizona. We have always avoided #20 because it doesn't look like a great highway on the map. Last spring we decided to take it (mid April) and we really had to laugh. It was an excellent road and it took no time whatsoever to get to I-15. 89 north of Panguitch has always been soooo slow. If you are heading to the airport even if you think you have plenty of time I would suggest using 20 and getting to the Interstate because anything can happen to hold you up. It is scenic but if you have a plane to catch - don't take the chance.

At this time the plan is to leave for Salt Lake City late in the afternoon / early evening.

The flights out aren't until almost noon the next day.

I definitely go Hwy 20 at that time as it will be dark for most of the drive so you wouldn't really see anything in the way of scenery. You would be much better getting to 15 nightfall.
