Bryce Canyon in January - Avoid or Go For It?
 

In two weeks, I'm going snowskiing at Park City. On the last day, I'm thinking about driving down to Bryce Canyon (instead of skiing on 4th day). I keep hearing that Bryce Canyon is spectacular, but should I go in January? Will all the snowfall take away from the natural beauty of the canyon? More importantly, are the roads TYPICALLY easily navigatable at this time of year? Also, how long of a drive is it to Bryce Canyon from Park City?

I've only been there during warm weather, but based on the pictures I've seen the snow ADDS to the natural beauty. Sorry that I don't have an opinion about any of your other questions.

I agree with Mike, the snow would only add to the beauty of the park.

Do you realize that you're looking at 530 miles round trip. That's a LONG day trip!!!! Keep in mind that the days are short and you will be doing a lot of driving in the dark!!!!

Utah is right. She lives in that area and knows! You are planning a long trip for a short look over the rim of the plateau. I really think Bryce is worth more than a quick peak in the middle of a non trivial drive.

Bryce in the snow would be magnificent. I have never seen it in heavy snow, mainly because that is a very dry climate. But you can look at pictures of it and judge for yourself. In my estimation, snow enhances the beauty of the whole park area.

From Park City to Bryce, Mapquest gives the distance one way at 272 miles to the park entrance. To reach a good viewpoint, you are looking at 275-280 one way. The Salt Lake City airport is listed as being 260 miles north of Bryce.

Given that Bryce is one of my favorites, I really think you would serve your interests better to go when you have the time to make your trip highly worthwhile and enjoy all that this beautiful park has to offer.

On the other hand, I understand your urge to visit this natural wonder. I tried to make a day trip out of it once from Salt Lake City, but snow forced me to stop short and retreat. I was a working man, and I had to catch a flight back the next morning.

I support the idea of seeing the park, but I feel that seeing it well is the most enjoyable way to go. It will be there for a few hundred years more!!
