I think we should all have a race from Vegas to Zion. I consider myself a pretty fast driver and we didn't make it to Zion in 2.5hrs.
Back to the original post. I think you should stick to just one park and save the other one for another time. If you don't like to hike or do many activities then go ahead and hit both parks.

Dayle is right...the small towns love to lurk and ticket.
There seems to be a perpetual speed trap between Mt. Carmel Junction and long Valley Junction. This is on the drive between Zion and Bryce. I have yet to go through the area without seeing this speed trap. The sheriff is very good at concealing his brown Bronco so take heed.
I'm all for making good time on the Interstates but am pretty law abiding on secondary roads....especially in Utah where there is such wonderful scenery.

The other factor that can really slow traffic this time of year are the many RV's traveling between parks. Going through Zion on Hwy 9 to Hwy 89, for the ride to Bryce, can require additional time and patience. When a large motorhome has to pass through the tunnel in Zion, traffic has to stop both ways so that the RV can travel down the center line as the low, curved roof that was built in the 1930's didn't anticipate large RV height.
As Peterboy said, Utah has wonderful scenery. Even though the secondary roads can be slow in the summer there are plenty of "oohs & aahs" to keep us entertained.
