Brooklyn Bridge
How does one go about walking the Brooklyn Bridge? Where is the starting point? How far is it? And also do you walk all the way across and then back?
|
Ambling along, the walk is probably about 30-45 minutes. You get on the bridge (Manhattan side) near City Hall. Once in Brooklyn, you can either turn around and walk back or there is a subway stop not too far away that will take you back to the city.

We took the subway across to Brooklyn and walked back from there! Much more to see -- about 30 minutes or so to cross. (Stay out of the bike lane!~)

How is it more to see coming from Brooklyn as opposed to coming from Manhattan? It seems like the view would be the same.

They just meant that you are facing the manhattan skyline on the way back. - but it is the same view - you just have to stop and turn to see it!!! If you walk across to brooklyn and feel like exploring head to the Brooklyn Promanade(look at a map) - the view is awesome. The neigborhood around the promenade is also very cool to walk around - it looks like sesame street!!

The better views are walking toward Manhattan from Brooklyn (for the skyline). "Walking the Brooklyn Bridge" may not be as thrilling as you anticipate, though. It's a long walk, it's usually very windy, and the air is chock full of vehicle exhaust fumes.

A better plan may be to head for the Promenade in Brooklyn (a lovely walk, and a terrific neighborhood for strolling, lunch, etc.) for views of the bridge and the skyline. For exceptional views of the bridge from the Manhattan side, head for South Street Seaport.

1956

Someone on this board had suggested that you should walk from Manhattan to the 1/2 way point and then head back again to Manhattan.
I like to do the subway to Brooklyn and then the 'one way' walk back to Manhatan. This way you get a "twofor" NYC experience. Subway and bridge.
Either way, the Brooklyn Bridge walk is a great experience of this city!
JOHN

We participate in the Juvenile Diabetes walk every September and walk across the Bridge. That portion probably takes about 20 minutes each way. And the world's best pizza is on the Brooklyn side - Grimaldi's. Now there's the necessary motivation to complete the walk!
