Brookfield Zoo (IL)

I read on the zoo's website that you can take public transportation/train from Chicago to the zoo and walk from the Hollywood/zoo stop. Has anyone ever done this, and how did it work out for you? I don't want to get a rental car, as I hate driving . . .would appreciate hearing from anyone who has taken the train from Chicago to the zoo. Also, this may sound silly, but is that train stop in a safe neighborhood to walk from? (obviously I'm not familiar with the area. Thanks a lot.

The metra is normally very safe to ride - much better than the el. As for the stop - it should be okay although I have never taken the train. I was just at the zoo two weeks ago and the neighborhood around the zoo is residential. You should be perfectly safe. Have a good time!

Taylor: The Burlington Northern/Metra train will take you from Union Station in downtown Chicago to the suburb of Brookfield, IL - a very safe 'burb. You will be minutes from the zoo. Your only problem is that you are tied to the train's schedule - not your own.

I ride that train route every day. The stop for Brookfield Zoo is very safe. Cute neighborhood with little winding streets, lots of big trees. There is this neat stone lion statue at the zoo stop. I have never actually got off at that stop and gone to the zoo, so don't know how far it would be, but always see people waiting to get on the train at the end of the day, lots of strollers and little kids, so zoo must be fairly close to the train stop.
