It's the best hospice in the city. He's in good hands. Not all the best stuff in the city is in Manhattan.

I wouldn't worry too much about the taxi. All taxis have GPS systems now. Most taxi drivers will not know how to read maps. The best thing to print out would be driving instructions, but even then I'm not sure it would help.

When you go back to the airport, call a Bronx-based car service. The hotel will have recommendations.

Doug, Sorry but not every taxi has GPS nor every car service--we've found this out the hard way. I give my boss written directions so SHE can suggest how to go if necessary.

You should have no problem asking a driver to bring you to Arthur Avenue from Calvary. It is quite a short ride as they are only about three miles apart.

089 should be good, or try the owner's slightly more upscale, but still casual, Roberto's where you can try that radiatore in the foil bag, en cartocchio they call it. At Roberto's stick to the specials as much as possible, and maybe try the Scamorza appetizer that I tried, and failed, to copy at home.

For dessert and to take to family at hospital, try Madonia Bakery on Arthur Avenue....great cookies, biscotti, cherry chocolate bread, etc. (but not for frothy layered confections...there are others for those..)

Sorry for the sad occasion. Calvary has a reputation for some of the best end-of-life care in the City, and beyond.

NY Traveler, which hotels are you familiar with in the borough?

I thought every yellow cab had to have GPS, that is why they no longer keep a trip sheet. The cabbies hated it as if big brother was watching.

Yes, every yellow cab has a GPS, and I've never been in one of the big-service cars (Dial 7 or Carmel) that didn't have and use one. Some of the smaller car service companies don't require their drivers to have them, and I've never used Uber or Lyft, so I can't speak to those.

Two months ago my boss had a Dial7 driver who got lost in the Bronx on the way to one of the hospitals--she missed one appointment because of it. This may no longer be the norm, but I am just saying that it may still be possible and couldn't hurt to be prepared.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I thought I'd report back.

Taking a cab from LGA:
Yes, the driver had GPS on his phone but had no idea where he was going. Driving with one hand and the phone in his face with the other. Took the Triborough Bridge & a lot of city streets. My husband tried to direct him but he wouldn't listen. Quite a long ride. Price--$55 including tip.

Taking a car service back to LGA:
Took the Whitestone Bridge. Driver knew exactly where he was going. There in a flash. Price--$65 including tip.

Dirty cab vs. deluxe private car-----$10 more definitely worth it!

Marriott Residence Bronx Hotel:
As good , or even better than promoted. New, very well run, excellent hot breakfast, professional front desk, easy walk over to Calvary Hospice or any of the hospitals in the area.

Found a very good restaurant for dinner , The Pines, easy to walk to, and very good food.

Calvary Hospital is very well run and my husband got to visit with his friend.

He did take the train down to the Lower East Side to visit another friend's office & have coffee but it was not an easy process. He would not suggest staying in The Bronx as a tourist to Manhattan.

"He would not suggest staying in The Bronx as a tourist to Manhattan."

Nor would anyone else :)

Glad he got to spend time with his friend. That's all that really matters.
