Broadway Shows through TKTS
 

I will be in New York next week and would like show suggestions for Broadway shows that I can get discount tickets at TKTS.

You will not know until the day of which shows TKTS offers. The really popular shows don't show up at TKTS.

If it's midweek, you'll probably have a wide choice, probably including Aida, Beauty and the Beast, Bombay Dreams, Caroline or Change, Chicago, Fiddler on the Roof, 42nd Street, Frozen, Golda's Balcony, I Am My Own Wife, Jumpers, Little Shop of Horrors, Rent, Sly Fox, The Boy from Oz, The Phantom of the Opera, Sly Fox, Thorough Modern Millie and Wonderful Town.
For weekend performances, about 1/2 to 3/4 of the above.
What won't be up there are Lion King, The Producers, Wicked and Mamma Mia.
Possibles for midweek are Hairspray and Movin' Out.

To Soward R: Sounds like you are familiar with the current shows. Have you seen Jumpers??? Worth the money? We will be 5, 2 young teenagers, and want to see one show. Possible to get good buy ahead? Will be there Jun 2-6.Are Sunday matinees or night performances difficult to get discount tickets for? Any help would be appreciated!

Recently in Manhattan for a couple of weeks, I worked while my husband saw shows. TCKT booth at Seaport didn't have matinee tix when we were there. He loved Wicked, Wonderful Town and Assasins. Liked other castings of the Producers. Prefered touring company of Movin Out. Dissappointed in Gypsy. Thouroughly Mediocre Millie. Sly Fox pretty good for a few laughs - not great. Didn't get to Avenue Q but have heard great reviews - very funny. Just one man's opinion....have fun!!!!!!!!!

I really like Frozen.

The recommendations of Time Out New York are in my experience pretty reliable - if they like it it's not oging to be bad.

Actually Howard, I think I read last week that for the first time The Producers was showing up at TKTS.

To MikeN: I don't think young teenagers would enjoy jumpers. It's a tough call as to what that age would appreciate. I'd put Hairspray at the top of that list. Perhaps Little Shop of Horrors or Phantom of the Opera.
On Sunday, Broadway shows perform a matinee.

Another vote for Hairspray for kids, and for everybody. Mamma Mia another good choice for that age I would think.
And Bombay Dreams maybe third choice - I am a partisan of it but would call it good, not great. It is fun & has enough spectacle, romance, and rocking music to provide a good memory.

We were in NY last april and saw 3 shows with 2 teenagers(girls) :

2)42nd street
3)hairsparay.
We are french so Mamma Mia is based upon Abba tubes and so more an european ""culture"" (with 2""...)
But story is easy and choregraphy not so bad.
42nd street was very impressive for our daughters because of the tap choregraphy and the ensemble.
Hairspray was their less favorite because they were not so interested in the racial problem...and they have found some gestual jokes a little too
crude...
For teenagers another one good is the Phantom of the opera and if they have seen the moovie and like it, Chicago is
a must...

I was in NYC over spring break with my two daughters, aged 9 and 12. Wicked is *the* show to see right now, but tickets are hard to get. I purchased all our theatre tickets well ahead of time to avoid wasting valuable vacation time standing in line. Note that when we were there, tickets for most shows were hard to come by -- I've noticed that attendance for *all* shows has declined over the last few weeks. Maybe it's that time of year? I don't know. Anyway, I was able to get great discounts (just as good as the TKTS booth) by using the plentiful "discount codes" available *free* on line. Just search on the words "Broadway discount codes" and you'll find many ways to get discounted tickets. We saw Beauty & the Beast (half price) which my girls loved, of course. The sets and costumes are still impressive, after a 10-year run. Mamma Mia (paid full price for these- the show is too popular to get much discounted.) It was a bit too risque (just a little) for my kids -- but very fun. We *LOVED* Thoroughly Modern Millie (also got half price with a discount code) unlike the last poster who didn;t care for it. My 2 cents -- it was by far our favorite show. Susan Egan and Dixie Carter are amazing. Finally, saw 42nd Street -- which was all around fun. Again, mu kids thought all the tap dancing was amazing. We bought those tickets at the box office that same day -- I simply asked "Do you have any discounted tickets available?" and voila, the tickets were half price. Bottom line - I suggest you check other alternatives, rather than stand in line for an hour. ENJOY NYC!!!!
