Broadway Shows for 10 year old and family

Our older daughter just graduated from high school. We are planning a NYC trip in August. We are bringing her 10 year old sister. Have been reading all the Broadway show talk and trying to figure out what we could go to that both would enjoy. Thinking Mamma Mia because Lion King is too expensive and girls weren't excited about Mary Poppins. I need little or no language and no nudity. We want a musical. Any ideas?

Newsies is another good one, Wicked is one I enjoy as well but the tickets might be really expensive as well.

Loved mama mia, but there is some mild sexual innuendo and talk in it that you may not want. that said, i took my 6 year old, but i think 6 is easier than 10 with that.

Loved peter and the starcatcher.i hear newsies is great though and would fit for your family.

I will have to look up a summary of Newsies and Peter and the Starcatcher. I am not familiar with either one. My younger daughter has seen the movie of Mamma Mia with no problem.

Newsies was also a movie in the 1980's starring Christian Bale. It was wonderful and the reviews for the Broadway production are also good.

Peter and the Starcatcher is not a musical. It's a play with some songs. And though it's based on Peter Pan, it's not aimed at children.

Mama Mia is fine for kids, as is Newsies, as is Sister Act. I think your daughters might like Mary Poppins more than they think they will. There's another thread about plays and musicals suitable for a 14-year-old girl.

The jury is evenly split on Mary Poppins. I took a nap during the entire first act. My husband and one of my adult daughters loved it.

Broadway -- Wicked.
You might want to consider off Broadway. Stomp is in the East Village; lots of fun; lots of young people. Both children may enjoy. Also, check to see if Blue Man Group (from very young, 5?, to adults -- laughter) is playing in NY. All 3 meet your 'criteria'. Check travelzoo.com and broadwaybox.com for discounts. Google TKTS booth -- same day discount tickets. Have a great time.

I'd vote for Wicked. When we've seen it there were lots of girls that age in the audience, and they seemed to love it.

I agree with Doug's assessment of Peter and the Starcatcher. I've seen it twice and think that most of the humor would be lost on a child of 10.

I say if you are going for a special trip, spend the $$ and see lion King. I am a VERY jaded theatergoer and I think it's like nothing else you will see on Broadway or anywhere else. And I am NOT a Disney fan .....
