Broadway Shows
Hi!
Travelling to NY for the first time and really would like to see Momma Mia on Broadway. Should I order my tickets online or check out the discount booth the day of? It is a show I really want to see so not sure if I should risk the discount tickets. are there any ways to get discounts online ahead of time? thanks! |
When are you going? After something like 14 years, it is closing on September 12. If you're going before then, go to broadwaybox.com and follow the link to buy discount tickets from Telecharge (or Ticketmaster, I forget). But yes, discounts are available that way (or same discounts via Playbill.com or Theatremania.com which work the same way). Do not use other sites that don't take you direct to Telecharge or Ticketmaster.

There is a website that I find useful that tells you what the discount is today and all of last week for various performances, so you can see the odds. Today that ticket is 20% off for tonight's show.
http://www.nytix.com/Broadway/Discou...yTickets/TKTS/ Your best odds are the Thursday matinee, which doesn't surprise me. But if it's closing, you never know. If you really want to see it, I wouldn't risk TKTs (or do the wait) for only 20 pct off myself. |
Thank you so much! I did not know it was closing. We will be there from Aug 26-Sep 3 so we will get to see it!

Well certainly it's not worth 20% when you can get a full choice of available seats at 30% off with the current BroadwayBox discount that you pick your seats and order tickets now. (40% off for back of house or mezzanine).
Christine, sometimes that nytix is a good deal, especially for shows that do not have current discount codes, but not for Mama Mia in this case. |
Actually, you may not get to see it. Attendance at last-week shows tends to spike for these long-running musicals, as the audience fills up with family and friends. Don't count on it showing up at TKTS the last weeks it's running. That doesn't usually happen.

Well tickets are still available and at discount for most performances, but Doug is definitely right. You won't see it if you wait till you get there.

neopatrick, I don't understand your comment. The website I posted was just to see what the discounts and availability at TKTS are for shows. They said TKTS was offering 20 pct off, that's all, most of the time last week. I don't use that website for anything else or to buy tickets (I don't know if it even does that or not, never looked).
That's how I interpret that website, that the discount they show is what TKTS offered on certain days, as it is past history. Isn't that correct? I don't know of any other website that shows you the odds of getting something at TKTS and what prices they are offering. |
No disagreement, Christina. My point was why would you wait to buy at TKTS when currently they are only giving a 20% discount (and it's likely to disappear as it gets closer to closing) when you can buy advance tickets for any day and even pick your seat for 40% discount. That was my main point. (Not that you were suggesting they wait).
I think you're right that no site really gives odds on what will be available at TKTS in the future, but my point was that they currently aren't doing as good of a deal as the regular discount codes for advance purchase. My other point was that sometimes you can only find discount codes for 20% off or no discount at all, but by going to the TKTS site you can find out that mostly they are selling that show at half price. In that case it might make sense to wait and try for TKTS on day of performance -- especially if they seem to be available all the time. |
