Broadway show for 24 year old male
 

Hi everyone

My cousin will be in New York for the first time from Slovenia. He is 24 and works in a casino as a lighting designer and sound technician so I thought he would be interested in seeing the special effects at a show. I'm not sure how well he speaks english - I'm told it's pretty good.

Would wicked be a good choice? I was thinking Stomp but I would like to have him see a show on Broadway as oppose to downtown.

What about Blue Man Group? They have a darn good light and sound show, and lack of english would not be a problem.

Spring Awakening won the Tony for lighting in 07.

For subject matter he would enjoy Ave Q.

Wicked would be a great choice as far as special effects. You might also consider The Lion King- not exactly special effects, but beautiful costumes and design. Perhaps he might also be familiar with the story, which could help with language concerns.

On the other end of the spectrum, Spring Awakening is a really interesting design concept- very minimalist. So that could be one to consider as well (it's not for the conservative though!)

We loved Wicked - I think it would be a great choice.

Spamalot? Young Frankenstein?

I've seen most of these choices mentioned and Spring Awakening is the one that is the most memorable. It also won other Tonys, I think best musical. The poster is right, it is not for the conservative. But people in his age group (and others) return over and over to this show. I met people of all ages who said it was their 14th or 17th time. It is the most hip of the list and the most contemporary.

My second choice would be Spamalot because it's a terrific show, great music. Wicked is okay but for a 24 year old male I'd go for one of the other choices first, imho.

If budget is an issue, many of the shows are available at the TKTS booths (for info on what's been there lately go to tdf.org/tkts ) or with discount codes from broadwaybox.com

But Wicked is never discounted. In fact, sometimes you can only get premium priced tix.

The off B'way things like Blue Man Group, Stomp, Fuerzabruta are more visual.

Stomp IS good (particularly in the small venue in NYC) but probably doesn't fit your criteria for Wow ! effects & lighting.

For a "wow" effect, I would definitely recommend Wicked. It's a large theater though, so not all seats are good -- try to get good seats ahead of time.
