Broadway Banter -- Spring 2012???
 

Hi all Broadway Lovers, I can't find a new thread on Broadway. Please point me to it if I've missed something.

I will be in NY for one day - Sunday, March 25. Looking for a show to see. I know Sunday's are difficult. Will try for a cast connection to Book of Mormon for a ticket but I don't hold out much hope. What else would you all suggest?

Yes if Peter and the Star Catcher has started previews see that or Ghost. I saw the last off Broadway performance of Peter and absolutely loved it.

What did you both think of Wit?

Very good.....but depressing.

I don't see Other Desert Cities on your list. It should be at the top of possible shows to see! It's theater at its best!

We thought WIT was excellent. Did not find it depressing. The subjct matter is of course death, but the play is witty, funny, tender, and the end is actually joyous. Cynthia nixon was very very good in this role.

Have you seen it Bowsprit?

I enjoyed Wit with someone who really had a terrible time there!

But we saw it in previews.

I second 'Other Desert Cities' and 'Peter and the Starcatcher.'

For a future trip, try 'The Lyons.' This is why Linda Lavin did not do ODC on Bway.

I'll be in NY in June for a BarMitzvah and want to squeeze in a show with my 9 year old. Thinking Peter and the Starcatchers. Being a Miami girl, I am a huge Dave Barry fan and who doesn't love Peter Pan! It was the second Broadway show I saw as a kid and Peter was the one and only Julie Andrews. Anyway....will it be great for my 9 year old son?
DH and I absolutely adore Evita, but we've seen it before just not on Broadway. Which to choose? Or do you recommend something else? We've seen most of the classics, but not the newer stuff.

Oops!!! It wasn't Julie Andres, my mom just corrected me. It was Sandy Duncan. As I said I was just a kid!!

Has anyone seen "Death of a Salesman"? The few reviews I've read have been good ones.

Miami - I didn't think a 9 yr old would get all the humor in Peter, etc. It wasn't a children's show and a lot of the humor was geared for adults. I also caught the last show off broadway.

SueNYC, what do you think?

I just looked at an ad for Peter and there's no indication that they're marketing it to adults or kids. So, now I'm thinking that maybe a 9 year old would like it, especially all the action, even if they didn't 'get' all the humor. On the show's official website, there is an FAQ and they say it's appropriate for ages 10 and up. So, what's one year?

Now I don't know, I think he'd enjoy a musical more...
Ive got my eye on Nice Work if you Can Get It. Previews start later this month. Seems like it has to potential to be great....Gershwin music, current script, and Matthew Broderick. Any word on the "street" about it?

Nice Work If You Can Get It just opened with previews last night. So, it's a little early for any meaningful feedback yet. I'm not sure if this would be the best choice for a 9-year-older. He'd probably enjoy Spiderman.....though I'm not sure about Mother!

Saw Peter and the Star Catcher. We did NOT like it much. I think a 9 year old would HATE it (or fall asleep). It was certainly well done; had some marvelous performances; some very clever one-liners and puns … It has none of the flavor one would expect from Dave Barry.

The show was quite stylized, a bit high-brow at times, and would break from its setting and time period to interject lines about Starbucks and other present cultural phenomena. It was not intended for children—yet the story was essentially an adult telling of a children’s fantasy.

I enjoyed the ending and was quite moved by it—but it was not a favorite, nor something I could recommend. FYI, we LOVED “Wicked” which is essentially the same concept—a prequel to a famous children’s story. But that worked infinitely better for us. I know “Peter” got rave reviews off B’way. It’ll be interesting to see how it fares on the big stage.

I second the suggestion of Spiderman. Was surprised to really enjoy it. Very entertaining.

Saw "War Horse" and thought it was excellent. "The End of the Rainbow" was FANTASTIC. I predict a Tony win for the actress portraying Judy Garland. Wow.

But ,,, The Book of Mormon was in a class by itself. It lived up to all the hype--and more. LOVED every minute of it.
