Broadway Banter Posters.....Help?

Going to NYC for 5 dyas next week. Have tkts for Billy Elliot, and need 2 more plays please.
I was thinking of Driving Miss Daisy (hard to get discounted tkts :-) ). Saw most of the Big hits, I have been reading reviews here and elsewhere, but nothing seems to catch my fancy.
Addams Family? Million Dollar Quartet?

TC Jan 15th, 2011 06:51 PM

Hi Judy , I think you have to give us a bit more info about your likes. I saw Addams Family twice in the last month and thought it was a hoot both times. Others don't like it....so it's a very personal choice. Merchant of Venice was amazing but you might not be a Shakespeare fan.

HowardR Jan 15th, 2011 07:03 PM

Definitely see the revival of La Cage Aux Folles, one of the best things on Broadway.....and discount tickets are available.
If you want a non-musical, Time Stands Still starring Laura Linney is a solid choice. Discount tickets are also available for that one.

AnnMarie_C Jan 16th, 2011 03:42 AM

We saw La Cage Aux Folles last month and loved it although, as we walked out, I heard two young girls in front of me say they thought it was boring. :-O

Judyrem Jan 16th, 2011 06:35 AM

Thanks TC, I think a funny play is in order. I like almost anything. I would not mind seeing Merchant, but will have to get DH to agree.
HowardR, I think we may do Le Cage, we could use some laughs.
Yes, Howard I was reading about Time Stands Still.

Anne Marie, LOL.

MareW Jan 16th, 2011 08:30 AM

I got Driving Miss Daisy tickets at the TKTS booth last month, and have also seen it discounted online. I don't think you'll have a problem getting a discount unless it is selling out more now because it's closing soon.

TC Jan 16th, 2011 01:06 PM

I totally agree with Howard regarding La Cage -- I loved it too. That would be a great choice. If you want all laughs, AF and LC would fill the bill out nicely.

starrs Jan 16th, 2011 04:57 PM

I liked Million Dollar Quartet but the Broadway Banter folks have convinced me that I need to see La Cage. I didn't because I don't like Kelsey Grammer. But next time...

I would LOVE to see Vanessa Redgrave on stage.

Judyrem Jan 17th, 2011 05:39 AM

Me too Starrs. I think my DH would like the Million Dollar Quartet also.
I think I will wait to see what is available at TKTS.
Good recs so far.

starrs Jan 17th, 2011 05:55 AM

I think he will too. I follow a lot of the comments about "shows for men" on here and have made a point of looking at the audience during shows to see the expressions on men's faces. Most were truly enjoying MDQ - as did HowardR too :-)

If you've not signed up for BroadwayBox's email alerts, do so. You'll be notified of great discounts. Before I go I check the grosses per week at playbill.com and do a pretty good job guessing what's going to be discounted (or not). I WILL pay full price for a show I really want to see, but prefer to buy tix using a Broadwaybox.com discount over standing in the line at TKTS. Most of the time the discounts are similar and I've saved vacation time not waiting in line.

If you want to see a play (vs musical) be sure to go to the TKTS line on the right. It's much shorter and moves faster.

Are you aware of the 2 for 1 ticket offers for next week?

It's also restaurant week

We'll be missing those great 2:1 offers by one week! Too bad.

Anyone here see "Other Desert Cities"? What'd you think?

TC Jan 17th, 2011 09:44 AM

I had a quite good experience on a recent trip to NY. Printed the Broadway Box discount coupon and took it to the Box Office for Addams Family. As it turned out, it wasn't valid for the night I needed, but the box office lady was really sweet. She said, "Oh, I have a code here that will work." Last week the lines at TKS were amazingly long given how freezing cold it was. BB discounts are usually 40%. To me, that extra 10% just isn't worth stand on line.

Bowsprit Jan 17th, 2011 09:47 AM

TC: I would agree. It's no fun standing on line in freezing weather.

Anyone have any experience with "Other Desert Cities"? I'll have to check BB for discounts, but I doubt they are out there yet.

mclaurie Jan 17th, 2011 11:47 AM

I've heard it's very good and there is a discount here http://www.broadwaybox.com/shows/oth...c_tickets.aspx

Bowsprit Jan 17th, 2011 12:37 PM

Thank-you, mclaurie. I looked at that BB discount but what I saw expired Jan. 13th. Maybe I looked at the wrong thing? Telecharge doesn't have any tickets at all for this upcoming weekend for this show. I'll see what else I can come up with, either another ticket broker or another show.

mclaurie Jan 17th, 2011 01:12 PM

That discount had to be purchased by Jan. 13 which is when the show opened. I think it got raves so no discounts. http://theater.nytimes.com/2011/01/1...s/14other.html

Judyrem Jan 17th, 2011 01:15 PM

Mclauries, you are wonderful! Thanks so much for the links, especially the restaurant week.
Starrs, I do have Broadway box alerts. :-)
I agree with you TC, bowsprit..no fun to stand in line!!!!
BTW, I just got tickets for Million dollar quartet..thanks for the recs Howard and Starrs.

starrs Jan 17th, 2011 01:28 PM

Yay! I'm glad. :-)
Try to see Vanessa while you are there. Tell her I said "hi" ;)

HowardR Jan 17th, 2011 02:38 PM

How could I forget to recommend Million Dollar Quartet. You'll love it, Judyrem!

starrs Jan 17th, 2011 02:42 PM

:-)

Kealalani Jan 17th, 2011 04:24 PM

I prefer to go to the boxoffice with coupons when possible, as you are given more lattitude in seating choices. When we went to NYC recently we could have gotten half off at Driving Miss Daisy, but chose to go to the boxoffice for a little more $. I think you have a good chance of getting tickets from Playbill or BroadwayBox coupons as well as the booth. Here's my report.

Thanks for the tip Kealalani!
