bringing wine home from sonoma
 

Those of you who have bought wine in Sonoma/Napa area, do you have the wine shipped back to your home or just buy it on-line or what? I live in Chicago.

One of the joys & advantages to traveling to this area is that there are so many wines you will not find anywhere else. Some wineries will ship very reasonably. Othertimes, we will just ship it to ourselves (although this is not cheap). We always try to carry on the best of our purchases, to make sure it is cared for properly.

We have always brought home wine from those areas and just check it on the plane as part of our luggage. Ask for a "wine box" at one of the wineries - we have two that hold 12 bottles each and is styrofoam and have never broken a bottle. It's the same type of box they use if they ship the wine to you. Just mark the box "fragile" and we have never had a problem with the airlines or broken a wine bottle.

I brought 2 cases back last year as part of my checked luggage. I found that some wineries had them, and some didn't. You can always get a couple at a UPS store/Mail Boxes, etc, or whatever they are called. They're about $5-7 each. They are really popular now since you can't carry-on anymore. ((b))

Don't see how that is possible any longer. No liquids over 3 oz in carry on (unless you can get your doctor to write a prescription for the wine :) )

I may be wrong on this, but it's my understanding that you can't ship wine to some states. Some years ago, wine could not be shipped into Nevada. I don't think it applied to liquor stores or grocery stores, but to private parties. My brother shipped my wine up to me a few months ago..from Sonoma County to Reno. Not anyone would take it..UPS wouldn't but I believe it was FedEx that did. It was pretty pricy. You might be better off taking it as checked luggage as suggested.
