Bring or Rent Snorkel Gear for Hawaii

Ok the 2 years ago I went to Hawaii (my first time ever on an Airplane) and May 30th I am fortunate enough to go again for my honeymoon. The last time I went, we packed our snorkel gear in our suitcases(mask, snorkel, fins) and it took up a ton of room. Is it cheaper just to rent the equipment in Hawaii? We are staying at the Westin in Maui. Any help is greatly appreciated!

T.J.

You could bring your mask and snorkel, which shouldn't take up too much room - and just rent the fins.

That's what we always do: bring the mask and snorkel, rent the fins -- unless you own the world's most fabulous fins and MUST have them!

Years ago, my wife met a couple in line at the airport who were fascinated with her boyfriend's struggles with their heavy baggage. She had packed her rollerblades for a week in Hawaii. She is now the founding member of Overpackers Anonymous - and I pack her bags for each of our excursions.

As a tag-along on this thread...does anyone know of a place in North Shore in or near Haleiwa where one can rent snorkel gear, boogie boards, etc.?

Also, I remember someone packing boogie boards but can't find that thread. Any suggestions on how to do this?

Many thanks for any ideas that come my way.

I can't imagine using a used snorkel and mask -- like using someone's toothbrush. Take your own.

I purchased a set of reef fins from a local dive shop. They're shorter than the regular fins and fit nicely into the suitcase.

Trav -

try either Haleiwa Surf n Sea (www.surfnsea.com) or Deep Ecology. Both will rent masks/snorkels/fins if that's what you want.

I think perhaps Haleiwa Surf n Sea will also rent boogie boards, as they rent surf boards.

A few years ago we purchased our gear
at Surf 'n Sea in Haleiwa. We had major problems with the c**p we had purchased
on the mainland on our first time out
in the water. Your trip will be dismal
if your mask doesn't fit and your snorkle leaks. The staff at Surf n Sea was very good, quite in the know.
You can rent fins, we don't cause we like our own gear for diving, but unless you are going to take up that sport, I'd rent.
Say hello to Shark's Cove for me !

Could anyone recommend where to rent snorkel equipment(fins)near Waikiki beach? We will be staying at the Outrigger Waikiki for 3 nights after 7 nights on Maui. Im going to check with Snorkel Bobs for fins while on Maui since its 10 minutes from our hotel. Thanks!

NOthing but good to say about Snorkel Bob's from me. I bought a magnifying mask from them and it and the snorkel are terrific.

Thanks for the replies. I will contact Surf n Sea. Has anyone packed boogie boards? I was thinking a big canvas duffle bag with all gear.
