Great trip to RMNP yesterday. We drove from Breckenridge to Estes Park along the Peak to Peak road. Breckenridge had a light dusting of snow when we woke up but there was no snow as we drove to RMNP. A few sprinkles of rain and two rainbows, but no snow.
Entering RMNP, we drove along Trail Ridge Road up to Rainbow Curve where the road was closed due to sleet and snow. Then we explored the other roads on the east side of the park. Beautiful landscapes wherever we looked. Then we "stumbled" across the elk and mule deer. Three herds of elk, some bugling, etc. We walked along a trail to view the largest herd of elk (50?) and watched them in a golden meadow for a long while. We also saw three groups of mule deer close up.
I am sharing this in case it is helpful to others considering a trip to RMNP when Trail Ridge Road is partially closed.
Heading to the west side of RMNP tomorrow. Looks like Trail Ridge Road may be open again, so we'll see how it goes.
