Breckenridge, CO information

We're planning on staying at The Great Divide Lodge. Has anyone stayed there, and if so, what did you think of the place?

We're planning on taking the shuttle out from Denver and won't have a car. Although the hotel says it's 2 blocks away from town, someone posted a statement last year saying that it was NOT within walking distance. So what's the real answer? Is it going to be a problem with food and entertainment at night without a car?

Also, I know there are shuttles between resorts, so if we want to meet friends in Keystone for dinner, will we be able to take a shuttle or will taxi be our only option? In the alternative, does anyone have any suggestions for gourmet Breckenridge restaurants to celebrate a special occasion?

Sorry so many questions. Thanks to anyone with info - it's very much appreciated.

Annie sorry I cannot answer the lodging questions but there is a free bus that can take you to Keystone from Breck. http://www.co.summit.co.us/summitstage/

i am not sure if you have to go to Frisco to change buses though. That would take a while. You may want to call and ask if they have a direct bus to Keystone. that would be fine. your hotel may have a shuttle service as well. A taxi will cost a lot!

In Keystone is the BEST resturant for special occasions it is the Ski Tip Lodge. 5 course meal. Desert served in front of a roaring fire. a bit pricey but worth every penny! Must have a reservation. I have yet to find a really good resturant in Breck.

Thanks Kima for your response. I did some research regarding the Breckenridge to Keystone trip by shuttle. Yes, there's a transfer in Frisco . The trip should take about an hour and twenty minutes. I think normally it's about a 25 minute drive. So I guess that option is out!

I did find two restaurants that might be a possibility. The Hearthstone and Blue River Bistro.

If anyone has any opinions regarding these two, or any additional info, your comments would be welcomed.

Hi again Annie. We had our rehearsal dinner at the Hearthstone, now this was 10 years ago but we were so disapointed that we have never been back. The Blue River Bistro is owned (I think) by the same people that own the Uptown Bistro in frisco which does have great food, marginal service.

One thing to think about is that we hired a van before if you have enough people is can be economical rather than a taxi. You may be able to search the online yellow pages for the numbers.

Also depending again on the number of people in your group renting a car may cost less than the airport shuttle...even if you only use it a couple of times that may make sense.

Anyway your in for a fun time. Breck is a great town just not a great dining town.

You might want to check out the rental car prices. A couple of weeks ago, I found that Enterprise (not at the airport) was renting cars for $19.99 a day. And last week, we rented a car from Hertz for $19.99 a day under Freedom rates.

Annie - You're correct about the Summit Stage; it's not really an option. There is a bus that goes directly between Breck and Keystone, but it's a ski resort shuttle (don't remember the name), and I'd bet it doesn't run at night.

If your group is not large, consider Cafe Alpine in Breck. Quieter than Blue Ridge Bistro, and the food is better, IMO. Hearthstone is ok; it's very pretty, in an old Victorian, and can feed large groups very well.

The Great Divide Lodge is a timeshare place, and I've seen millions of ads for purchases there in the Denver & Summit Co. papers. I always wonder about a place that has to advertise itself so much, though I really can't say anything about as I've never been inside. I would say it's a very long two blocks into town - I doubt many people would make that walk, particularly in the winter. They may run shuttle vans to Main St.; it's worth asking (a neighboring resort, Beaver Run, runs shuttle vans into town ALL the time). There are ski shuttle buses right running by Great Divide that could take you into town during the day, but they stop running shortly after the ski slopes close for the day.
If you do rent a car to take you to Main St., you'll have to deal with parking, which isn't very easy in the evening during ski season, but it would make a trip to Keystone doable.
