Breakfast suggestions Portland
 

I've spent several sat nights in downtown portland over the past few months at the Westin or Benson. I can never find a really good breakfast on Sunday within walking distance of mfy hotel. any suggestions? I'm not necessarily after a sunday brunch, just a nice breakfast and within 8 or so blocks.

It doesn't get any better.

On a Sunday morning, any decent breakfast place is going to be mobbed unless you arrive very early.

I do know of two places close-in but not easy walking distance from downtown: there's Bridges Cafe at MLK and NE Knott (corner opposite to the Nike Factory Store). It's a tiny little place. You could take the MAX to the Convention Center stop then walk 15 minutes north on MLK to get there instead of taking the #6 bus if you wish (don't laugh at this suggestion - I saw a group of women women, one of them very pregnant, do this the other day, walk up to Nike from the MAX station.) The other place I like, Zell's, is at SE 13th and Morrison in SE. The #15 Belmont bus takes you to and from it very easily. It would be about a 25 minute walk each way otherwise.

Although our fave Sunday breakfast place (Bread and Ink on Hawthorn) is not walkable from downtown, we've also had excellent breakfasts at the Red Star, the cafe/tavern attached to the Fifth Avenue Suites.

I agree , Mothers on 2nd & Stark and the Red Star Tavern.

Funky diner kinda of breakfast, Fullers Coffee Shop on the same block as the Pearl Bakery ..NW 9th Ave..just get off the streetcar at Couch, turn right and walk one block :)

Mothers, Bijou, Everett St Bistro, Red Star Tavern are all downtown and all great!

I agree with the other suggestions, but add in Lorn & Dotties as well. It is about a block up from Mother's so if you go there and it is too busy, head to Lorn and Dotties.

Byways Cafe on 12th and Glisan is excellent but get there early to avoid waiting in line. It is worth the wait if you arrive late, though!

We had a nice breakfast one Sunday at the Heathaman Hotel in downtown Portland. Yummy crab cakes, poached eggs, fresh fruit, whole wheat toast and OJ and coffee. Great service also in the restaurant. We stayed at the hotel the night before, very nice. Have fun in Portland! ***kim*** ((#))

I knew this was the right group to ask. thanks for all the suggestions. Now we just have to pick one!

Bijou on 3rd Avenue in the Old Town area. I'm going to Portland next weekend and I can't wait to have another breakfast there. Long wait if you don't get there early though.

I've also had breakfast at the Red Star and at Byways and both were good but Bijou is the place I go back to over and over.

Sometimes we walk past ByWays on Sunday mornings and the smells ( bacon, hashbrowns) are so strong and so tempting! They are always crowded for breakfast..

I would not ordinarily recommend hotel restaurants, room service fare..but the Red Star is quite good.
In fact, we will be there this Sunday :) Meeting friends ..

Thanks for all the advice, Fodorites. Mother's got the nod this morning, and it was well worth the short wait. Yummy goat cheese scramble for me, and broccoli scramble for SO. I need to go back to try some other things.
It was pouring, (how unlike portland) and I intended to stop at Lorn & Dotties as it was marginally closer, but it appears they are closed on Sundays.
I look forward to trying the other spots in the future.

What? You went to Mother's and didn't get the salmon hash! Horrors.

sorry. My mother made me eat hash when i was a little girl, and I haven't eaten eat since. It was one of those deals where you sit there until you eat it, cold, congealed and nasty. Same thing with brussel sprouts. somehow the connotation of hash and mothers was not something I wanted to explore. Perhaps I need therapy! ;+)
